It was a mix of my starlight and Alaric's dark power. The crack didn't grow. The glass held. I was halfway across. I could see Alaric’s eyes. They weren't cold anymore. They were wide, watching me with something that looked like hope. But then, Morgana moved. She pulled a small silver whistle from her belt and blew a silent note. Suddenly, the soul link in my head snapped. The connection to Alaric was gone. The golden light under my feet vanished. Crrr-ack! The glass floor beneath me shattered into a thousand pieces. I screamed as I felt the air rush past my ears. I was falling. The obsidian spears were rushing up to meet me.

I tried and failed to pluck it from her hands as she swatted my hand away, clutching it to her chest like it was a real little girl, not a picture of a dead one. “Yes, I'm sure. Violet has this little star shaped birthmark on her arm. The girl in the picture doesn't have that.” She sobbed softly. Glancing down at my arm, I frowned. A star shaped birthmark? Like the one covered by my tattoos? I couldn't think of the repercussions of that little remark now. “Then why are you crying, Iris? It isn't your baby...” “Because it's someone’s little girl, Cyber. Someone is out there, and...”

I tell Violet. The words leave before I can stop them. The crowd gasps. “What?” she breathes. “Say you belong to me,” I say. “And I’ll stop.” Zoella groans beneath me. Violet’s hands tremble. “I will never belong to you.” Something inside me cracks. I shove Zoella again. Violet stands. She scans the ground. Finds a stone. She doesn’t hesitate. She throws it. The stone cuts through the air and hits my left eye.

The betrayal was too much. “How long?” Violet finally choked out, her voice hoarse, her lips trembling. She couldn’t look at Luna, not yet. She couldn’t handle it. Her eyes stayed locked on Christian, silently pleading for him to tell her this was some kind of mistake. That this nightmare wasn’t real. Christian glanced at Luna briefly before answering. “Does it matter?”

They finally entered an alcove area with a small counter, on top of which sat several vials. Violet suddenly reached out, took a small knife from her waistband, and sliced her wrist. She then reached over, grabbed a vial, and let her blood drip into it. When it was filled, she sealed it with a stopper. She bandaged her wrist with a rag, then held up the vial, examining it in the fading afternoon light. "You are putting your faith for his entire life in this one vial," Violet said. "And if it doesn't work?”

Oh, dear. ‘What a nuisance,’ Zin scoffed. I rolled my eyes, then raised two fingers. Violet shouted as she felt something ominous rise within her. She left them to do her bidding as she got out her crystal and tried to gaze into the ball. She only saw darkness and she almost yelled in frustration. She opened a tray that carried different poultices and began adding them to the mixture in Elise's hands. She collected the bowl and began chanting. The vulture began to shake and say Luna stone, Luna stone in a hoarse voice. Bianca backed away while Elise looked at the animal with interest. Violet suddenly had to stop mixing when her phone rang. “ It is your mate Elise and he is asking for you.”
