Not Aurora, someone far, far worse. Violet emerges from behind the plants and walks up to the counter. She blows out a bubble from her pink bubblegum, letting it pop right in front of Ivan's face. His jaw clenches but only a fool would call out Violet. "What do we have here?" she muses, eyeing the two of us as if she didn't just overhear everything being said. Her aura isn't as potent as Aurora's, her mates' or Logan's for that matter but it doesn't stop either of us from bending our necks towards her under her scrutinizing gaze.

Two burning crimson eyes, hovering in the blackness of the forest. “Khaenat,” Kael growled. A figure stepped into the moonlight. Violet — or what was left of her. Her skin was pale as bone, her lips a dark shade of violet, and her eyes glowed with that terrible, unnatural light. Every step she took left a faint shimmer of black mist on the ground. “Kael…” Her voice was soft but hollow, like something ancient speaking through a dying body. “You just don’t give up, do you?”

For Violet. Always.

“So I could forget about what mine looked like at the time.” He looked at her then, his orbs piercing into hers. “And now?” She met his eyes. They were warm and sort of inviting. “Now I just want to see it with someone who understands what it used to look like.” A pause came between them. A heavy and sweet silence. Violet indeed saw a different star. A star brighter than the one she grew up knowing. The one who brightened her path and guided her to the point she was at the moment. Now, she gradually forgot what her star used to look like—pauper, impoverished, skinny, hungry, and unfortunate.

FOURTEEN YEARS AGO Violet now had the tattoo on her face and white hair, so everywhere she went, people would stare at her, which was annoying, but there was nothing she could do about it. These two things were both a curse and a gift to her, and she couldn't get rid of them.

I wanted to tear that dress off and take her, feel her body melting in my arms. But still, things had been better between Rayan and me since the end of The Wave, and I didn’t want to throw that away. "That’s funny, actually. If she’s Violet, how did she get to this position as Sophia Crane, a company that’s been around for years? Come on, Ares, you can think better."
