I look through the window watching the white puffs of clouds passing through the plane as my whole body jittered. It's finally the day we leave for Hawaii and have two weeks off vacation to celebrate Rex and I's engagement. Grandpa had booked us first class for everyone and almost had taken the total seats with a large group like us. My son and his cousins are taking a jet with Grandpa back to London. However, I'm excited about this trip and still worried about being away from my baby boy.

A kind of hope that was sharp and dangerous, that made waiting unbearable. I exhaled slowly and forced myself to turn the page, even though I knew it wouldn’t help. My leg bounced under the table, energy coiling tighter and tighter inside me. Anticipation buzzed under my skin, making it impossible to sit still. I wanted answers. I wanted confirmation that this hadn’t all been a dead end. Footsteps crunched softly on the gravel path and my head lifted instantly.

Within the five minutes, I find myself settling into a chair at the front of the bookstore. I flip the phone face down on my thigh like it might burn me. Across the waiting area, a television murmurs quietly—news without sound, images sliding past without context. A woman in a scarf speaks urgently to no one. A graphic flashes. Something about markets. Something about storms. I wonder if the world will feel different when Leah wakes up. Or if it will feel exactly the same, which might be worse.

Where no part of the town seems to be untainted by their evil ways. I finally collapse back onto my bed, my eyes glued open wide but blank. I was alone now, and that was exactly how I wanted it. I leaned my back against the door, exhaling a shaky breath. The weight of the book felt like a boulder in my hands, but the knowledge it contained was a siren's call. I tossed it onto my rumpled bed, and it landed with a quiet thump, the sound sounding almost ominous. “Doubt keeps you alive.” He reached for a book from the nearest shelf and flipped it open. The pages were blank. “Do you know why my library has no dust?” I shook my head. “Because the books breathe,” he said. “They exhale what others forget.” He offered the book to me. The pages shifted—faint outlines forming, fading, forming again. Names, dates, a line of ink that moved like a pulse: Evelyn Blackthorne arrived under a waning moon. I slammed it shut. “You’re writing my story.”

The friendly welcome was quickly replaced with confusion and tension as Levi stared at nothing and remained completely still. Laurence and Patrick even seemed to sense the sudden change and watched the brothers intently, trying to figure out what was going on. “No!” Landon bolted back at Brooklyn as he finally snapped out of his trance. Brooklyn felt a sharp pain shoot between her shoulder blades and jolt her forward, making her stumble. The impact forced her to her knees and before she knew it, she was gazing up at the stormy clouds. Her lungs seemed to have seized as she struggled to suck in air. She felt the grass warm under her shoulders as she tried to suck air through a small straw.

“Yes. Stay awake.” His eyelids flickered. I shook him. “Alexander.” His breathing slowed. And I lost it. “Fight.” My voice cracked. “You fight for everything else. Fight for this. Fight for me.” His hand squeezed mine. Weak. But there. And I held on. The Longest Wait Hospitals smelled like endings. Like places where people held their breath and prayed. I didn’t sit. Couldn’t. I paced the waiting room, hands shaking, my pulse pounding loud enough to drown out everything else.

the stranger said but when he started to move away, Olliver grabbed his arm and whined, "Skaiii..wait ten minutes?" The stranger jutted his chin out, "You have five.."
