The morning air was thick with mist, clinging to the ruins of the temple like a shroud. Amelia Whitford awoke slowly, the events of the night before pressing heavily on her mind. The golden flecks in her eyes seemed to pulse faintly, a constant reminder that her bloodline had awakened powers she had barely begun to understand. Her body ached from the strain of exertion, yet even exhaustion could not erase the persistent pull of destiny that seemed to hum through her veins.

“Nothing about this is normal.” Silence falls. Cane exhales slowly. “She’s closer than we thought,” he mutters. “Closer to what?” I snap. Gunnar’s eyes lock onto mine. “Awakening,” he says. The word sends a chill through me. “What does that even mean?” I whisper. “It means,” Caden says carefully, “that what you are has been sleeping for a long time.”

That almost made things worse because a sleeping weapon was still a weapon. A queen who had forgotten she was a queen could remember and she was already remembering. The purple eyes, the other version of herself inside her own mind, hunger for Blackthorne essence, sudden power and the way Dax, Asher, Valerio and other males reacted to her. She was awakening, it's slow and incomplete, but happening. I leaned both hands against the table and closed my eyes for several seconds. I had wanted to tell my brothers. That was the sensible thing.

The silver network erupted with a brilliant, blinding light that illuminated the entire planet. The Witness opened its massive eye to its absolute limits. The fracture shook violently, and reality itself bent and warped around the platform. In that singular, terrifying moment, every single ancient being realized the exact same horrifying truth. Ava wasn't just recovering her memories. She was awakening. The Architect's face went completely pale, her voice a breathless gasp of horror. "No." The End took a massive step forward, its voice a deep, vibrating warning that shook the earth. IT IS TOO SOON. THE CONTAINER CANNOT HOLD.

He froze when he saw Tyla sitting up, the last remnants of silver fading from her arms. “Oh dear gods,” he whispered, voice quivering. “It’s begun.” Arthur’s tone sharpened like a blade. “What’s begun?” The healer stepped forward cautiously, like he wasn’t sure Tyla was entirely… safe to approach. “The Awakening,” he said. “The return of the dormant blood. It only happens when the lineage is threatened—or when the wolf comes of age.” Tyla blinked. “I’m twenty-one…” “Yes,” the healer said grimly. “The exact age White Moon Wolves manifested their true power.”

“We can't…. “No.” Cain's answer was flat, and if he wasn't anchoring the whole thing, I would have said he didn't give two fucks about Darius whatsoever. “But we don't have time to wait for the next opportunity. This is it.” He shoved a vial into my hands, almost knocking me off my feet. Crimson liquid sloshed inside and I recognized it immediately. Binding essence. “I'll anchor the perimeter and Hazel will be on guard.” He barked out orders. “and you Lyra, you're going to have to draw him in.”

Before he can ask me any more questions, I ask, “Dr. Bright, what happened to me?” He smiles and through the mind link, he replies, “According to the Supreme Elder, you are taking on your ultimate form. Based on what I’m seeing in your test results, that means you are physically becoming an Alpha. This is the first time I’ve ever heard or seen anything like this happening. However, the elders have said it has happened in the past.”

It would ruin everything. The rooms I had made for myself down here were perfect for what I needed. No one could enter them unless I wanted them to, as they couldn’t find them without me; that’s the beauty of living in the in-between. Flicking my hair over my shoulder, the swirling tattoos that covered my arms were moving; something was up. They were always the first indication something was going on, and I knew never to ignore them. I knew today would be different from when I woke up. Elves never slept much, and it was not for long when we did.

“You knew… didn’t you? Not everything. But… something.” Lyra nodded. “I suspected. The way you held yourself, the way wolves reacted to you, your strength… It wasn’t normal. Not for someone unshifted, underfed, traumatized. You had an aura. A spark. Alpha-born wolves feel different.” Sera looked down at her hands—her hands, that moments ago had been silver paws. “A purpose,” she whispered. “I finally know what I am.” “Not what,” Lyra corrected gently. “Who.”
