Lyra's POV: The path to the lake was silver in the moonlight. Just the moon hanging low and fat above the pines, spilling silver light across everything it touched. I loved this walk. I knew that probably made me crazy, or at least careless. A woman alone on a dark road at two in the morning, fifteen minutes from the nearest house that wasn't hers — it was the setup for every horror movie ever made. Reagan fell asleep against Kayden’s chest before we even reached the house. He carried her carefully inside and tucked her into bed. I stood in the doorway and watched him smooth her hair back from her forehead. He looked up at me. “She is strong,” he whispered. “She is loved,” I answered.
