Three shapes lunged out of the fog—creatures like wolves but disfigured, limbs too long, jaws too wide, fur dripping like oil. One hit him full force. Fenrak slammed into the ground but teeth met his forearm—not his throat. He punched the creature in the jaw, rolled, and kicked it off. The second shadow-thing came for his back and he twisted, driving his elbow into its snout. The third rammed into him hard enough to crack ribs. He gritted his teeth and shoved back. These weren’t beasts. These were nightmares with flesh. “Come on then,” he growled. “I’ve fought worse before breakfast.”

The entire ship trembled as its claws scraped along the floor. Mae froze. The vision sharpened. She saw it. The same towering silhouette from her nightmares. The one that stood at the center of the battlefield when the world burned. It was here. The thing forcing its way through the cracked barrier let out a shriek that rattled Mae’s bones. Its form was bigger than any of the others, its limbs spindled and twitching, claws dragging sparks across the floor. The smaller Forgotten scattered from its path, making room for their champion.

But this creature was no foot soldier. “Warden.” A voice whispered in my head. I recognized it from one of the memories from my past life. One of the ancient beings that once guarded the Forge during the first war. And Zerathos had reanimated it. “Oh gods,” Ava whispered. The Warden roared—a blast of sound that shattered all the glass around us and sent several of our warriors to their knees. I didn’t give it time to strike. I lunged forward, swinging my blade low toward its leg, Ava mirroring my move by sending a beam of light magic straight into its chest. But it barely staggered. It moved like smoke—fast and then solid again when it attacked.

There were more of me just being the main character of the moment, but funny enough, today was none of those. Tears threatened to form in my eyes as it dawned on me that I hadn’t moved on from anything. From his assault, from my mother’s death, from my childhood.
