Inside the SUV, the heater was cranked high, and someone had queued up a soft playlist that drifted beneath the hum of tires on ice.
“I swear, if I see one more pine tree, I’m going to start naming them,” Victoria muttered from the backseat, her legs curled beneath her, a travel mug cradled in both hands.
“You say that like it’s a threat,” Calix said beside her, unfazed. “Name the next one you see.”
“Fine,” she said, pointing out the window. “That one’s Harold. He looks majestic.”
Celeste chuckled from the front. “Poor Harold didn’t ask to be dragged into this.”
