Then he drove his fist into the stone wall beside him. Pain exploded. Blood spattered the map table. “She was never the bad luck,” he whispered to the empty room, clutching his split knuckles. “I was.” His wolf huffed, bitter. *You threw her away,* it said again. *Others saw what you ignored.* He looked down at the map spread before him. Mooncrest. Nightveil. Bloodthorn. Ironford. Lines of ink traced treaties, borders, and debt routes. Under those, another map lay—worn, corners dog‑eared.

“It’s not an actual kingdom. He’s not even on the map.” Evan says as I look through the books in the library. Got it! I pull the book from the shelf and lay it over the map and flip through the pages until I see the picture I was looking for. “Maybe not, but it is in the books.” I say pointing to the picture of the green valleys and mountains. “This is what I saw.” I tell him and he looks over it. “You’re sure?” He asks, and I nod.

“The map is a remarkable invention by one of the heroes; only our Empire boasts such a detailed representation,” Princess Ladia declared as she walked around the 3D map, showcasing its intricate features. “With this, our plans and strategies can be precise down to the last detail.” She paused, her finger hovering over a specific area of the map. “This is the Northern Dragon Mountain Range, which the Ifrit Family has been responsible for defending. It has served as a natural barrier between the Beast Kingdom and our Empire for centuries. However, it seems the Beast Kingdom has discovered a passage through this range.”

Behind him entered Elan, who gave me a soft smile as they approached. Laying out the paper on Thomas’s desk, a large map of the pack territories in the region illustrated. Borders were boldly marked, along with some other markings of which I was unsure their meaning. Off to the side, I noticed the leather-bound book that belonged to my grandmother. Whispers seemed to emanate from the book, distracting me briefly from the conversations that were going on. “What's going on?” I asked, looking away from the book to the others in the room.

Aries was looking down at the large wooden table. On the surface of it was what looked like a burned in map. It was actually created with magic, so you could make the map shift. Expand or zoom in if you would. Still it was just lines and names. depictions of towns. They might not have computers like Sybil’s old home, but they had other things. He was looking at where Velex had paused his army. Aries had his own line above the bottleneck where Velex would have to march them through.

I say as the silence that follows feels foreboding. I refuse to start sympathizing or analyzing an ancient mountain god just because he looks handsome and lonely. If he dosen’t want to answer any more of my questions then I’ll dutifully find the answers myself. My attention drifts toward a massive frost-covered map stretched across one stone table nearby. I step closer curiously but then freeze because the map before me isn’t just any map, it’s a map that shows more than the mountain terrains. It shows the surrounding kingdoms, the villages, valleys and the whole of Veyr.

So I might as well help you live through it.” He jabbed a weathered finger at the center of the scroll. It showed the Nytherra lands, but this version read deeper into the north. Black mountains. Winding ravines. Symbols in a language I barely understood.

She reached forward, flipped the page she was sketching on, and slid it beneath a closed book. Seconds later, she walked out the door. > “Pause that,” Sera whispered. Lucien did. She leaned in. > “There. She left it.” The table was still there. The book too. Lucien lifted it. A gust of stale air lifted the page beneath just enough for the paper to rise. Sera grabbed it. Unfolded it. What she saw wasn’t art. It was a map. But not geographic. Relational. Circles. Names. Arrows.
