Her fingers brush against the back of my neck. Light. Deliberate.
“I looked around for you, my love. Where did you run off to?” she asks, like she’s rehearsed it.
“I know we agreed—no phones—but it was urgent,” I say. “I’m sorry. But I’m back now. What'd I miss?”
She nods once, then turns back to Mother. “Just…stuff.”
Mother watches us like we’re the cover of some fairytale book she always wanted to write herself into. Her eyes are soft, approving. “You both just… work,” she says.
