POV: Jessa He just sighs and holds the basket. Back in the truck, I cue the only song that matters. “Santa baby…” I sing, sweet and slow as the engine warms. “Slip a sable under the tree…” Nick’s jaw flexes. His hands settle on the steering wheel, tight. I sing louder. Breathier. “For me…” He says nothing. I grin and keep going. “Been an awful good girl…” I lick my lips, just to see if he notices.

"Best Christmas present unwrapped. Nightcap?" But she grinned wickedly, already pushing me onto my back, straddling my hips. "Oh no, Dax, that was just round one. Elves don't sleep till all the toys are played with." Her hand stroked me back to life, eyes gleaming. "Your turn to lay back for Santa's ride..."

It was as if the child was not his own flesh and blood, but a mere instrument to be utilized as a tool in his sadistic machinations. I jolted awake, my scream piercing through the silence of the night. Gasping for breath, I muttered, "No! It can't be true!" My heart was pounding, and my body was covered in sweat. It took me a moment to realize that it was just a nightmare. But the fear lingered, and I knew I wouldn't be able to go back to sleep. What did the nightmare signify? Was it a forewarning, a foreshadowing of events to come? Or was it simply a manifestation of my trepidations and worries?

[Welcome to Eternal Nightmare. Survival is victory.] The cold, robotic female voice blasted through the dark while I was sprawled on the couch doomscrolling. The next second, a white flash nuked my vision and forced my eyes shut. When I opened them again, my living room had straight-up rage quit and turned into a blood-red wasteland. "Okay, what the hell?" I squinted and spotted my six-foot-two husband, Adrian Chase, already doing the whole protective-dad thing with one arm around our son.

“I know you will slay all my nightmares.” Mom starts singing a lullaby I haven’t heard in years. I hear the lute and harp playing the soft introduction. My eye lids are heavy. “Close your eyes the night is kind. Lay your heavy heart in mind. What you lost still knows your name love does not forget the flame. Sleep will take what words can’t say, carry pain far, far away. Dream my love, dream tonight. I will guard your rest till morning light. Dream my love don’t weep or fight you are held in dreams tonight.”

"But if I roll over, the blanket will shift. There will be an opening. Just for a second. And that's all you need." I say nothing. Because he is right. "I've seen you before," he continues, his voice steady, almost bored. "On the twelfth night. On the twenty-third night. You always come closer when I have the nightmare. You always whisper my name. You always say you want to help. But you don't. You want me to uncover myself so you can take me." The nightmare is gone from his eyes. He was never drowning. He was never suffocating. He was pretending.

A slow, aching heartbreak song filled the room, the kind that echoed the emotion he felt. Derick lay back, staring at the ceiling as the music wrapped around him, each note echoing the fear he refused to say out loud. Somewhere between the melody and the silence that followed, his chest tightened. And the phone stayed dark.

She laughs before climbing off the bed and scooping me up in one hand. Then the next thing she does is to rip off my head and then throw me into the garbage bin. The last thing I remember before it all goes dark is a horrible laughter coming from somewhere in the room, which is Marybelle’s real voice. So, lying there in the garbage with my body next to my head, I keep hearing that laughter till there is nothing and I assume I am dead.

I draw a circle on the color palette and turn the lights on. Now, Jamie’s clown face is brightened up by vibrant lights that blinks and change colors rapidly. “Almost forget to turn your light bulbs on.” I said, pointing at the phone screen, “Do you want to add some music?” Jamie gives the blinking fairy lights wrapped around his neck a weird glance, “These light bulbs sing?” “Hell yeah.” I read as I swipe down the list, “There’s Christmas carols on the playlist——Silent Night, We Three Kings, The First Noel…”

When her mother was lulling her to sleep that night, she read the expression on her face and interpreted it right-Fear "What are you scared of?" She asked softly "What I'll see on the night before my birthday" she answered with a small voice. "Don't worry, it won't be bad this time, I'll pray for you" and then her mother prayed until she fell asleep.
