I left the house and rode straight to Triumph Hotel. I booked a room directly across from 701. We had plenty of cameras at home. I brought a small one with me. I was going to catch them together. Ten o'clock. No one. Eleven. Midnight. Nothing was going the way I expected. I stayed up until dawn, my eyes burning. The door across the hall never opened. Chloe never showed up. Had I been wrong? The first thing River felt was the cold wall pressing against her back. She flipped her eyes open slowly, gazing around her. Although she couldn't make out where she was, she recognized her environment. She was in a cell. And, she was laid on its floor. It was dark. The only light that brightened the room was a single bulb hanging low above her. There is a bunk bed by the other end, fluffy mattresses and sheets arranged neatly into the springs. The floor had grey tiles, but there were also skid marks as if the floor had witnessed a lot of footprints.

It was a book on architectural design. "Isn't this what you studied abroad? Why are you reading it now?" she asked. Ryder continued flipping through the pages. "No reason. I found it while packing, so I figured I'd give it another look." Laura's instincts kicked in. "Packing? What are you packing for?" she pressed. "I told you a few days ago—I'm going to stay at Harry's place for a bit. Did you forget?" Ryder replied. Relieved, Laura exhaled. "Oh, that. Right."

Klaus would think I stay there only for the pup. I went to the river for the first time since Jackson took me. I was nervous, and I sniffed the air, but there was nothing that smelled of danger around. Shift back and threw myself into the river. The water was cold, and I swam up and down until my muscles ached. I went back home and got a sandwich from the kitchen. I didn't feel like having lunch.
