He told funny stories about his roommate’s disasters in the kitchen, asked questions about things I’d mentioned in passing weeks ago, and had this way of listening that made me feel like he was actually interested in what I had to say instead of just waiting for his turn to talk.
“So what’s the most embarrassing thing that’s ever happened to you?” he asked after we’d ordered.
“That’s a terrible first date question,” I said.
“You’re supposed to ask about my hobbies or my favorite movies or something safe like that.”
“This is a date?” he asked, raising an eyebrow.
