“I was just joking. Why were you running?”
“I wasn’t running,” I muttered.
She folded her arms and tilted her head.
“Hey, you are not allowed to lie to me. We’re friends and we promised not to keep secrets.”
I exhaled slowly and leaned against the wall. My shoulders dropped like they were carrying too much weight.
“Yeah,” I said quietly.
She stepped closer, her voice soft now.
“Are you okay?”
I swallowed hard.
“It really hurts.”
Her smile faded.
“What hurts?”
“This,” I said, pressing my palm to my chest. “Feelings. Love. It hurts. It hurts so much, right here.” I tapped my chest again. “My heart aches so badly that I feel like I can’t breathe properly.”
