I was in the training yard when the alarm bell rang in one long, deep tone that hadn’t sounded in forever. It cut through the air like a blade, reverberating through my ribs, silencing every voice in the yard. For a moment, no one moved. Then came the second strike, followed by chaos.
The recruits scattered. Some reached for weapons. Others froze, waiting for a command. I didn’t give one. I was already running.
I crossed the southern steps and vaulted over the low wall toward the main corridor, the wind catching my cloak as I ran. Somewhere behind me, someone shouted for a patrol unit to form. The bell was still ringing, the tone changing then I smelled smoke.
