The torches on each pillar of the settlement were already put out by the guards as they waited for the one assigned to ring the morning bell to do his work. Lesson was scheduled to start today. The days of leisure had come to an end, and the reason why they were all here dawned on them like the sun just had. The heavy metal bell that was situated a few miles from the settlement — it was so huge it got itself its own building. With stones arranged one on top of the other and glued together with clay, the bell was hung high up and could only be rung by pulling a very thick rope which went over the top of the bell and sank down, surely caught in between many other machines.

Scott was the more logical one whenever I was too anxious to use my brain cells. I ran my hands through my hair nervously. “What do I do now? I never meant for it to come out this way. I never wanted any of this to happen.” The last thing I wanted was to get into trouble with Stella and the Alpha. This looked like trouble. Ruining their plans. Elara's face lost all color. "It cannot be." "What?" She looked at Evelyn. "The Last Bell does not ring to announce disaster." Her voice shook. "It rings to call judgment." The fragments formed a circle above their heads. Then every piece rang at once. The sound was so powerful that the entire underground kingdom went silent. The Warden stopped moving. The Gatewalker froze.

They gave each other a quick glance, the kind that carries a full conversation in less than a second. Then they stood, gathered their things, and walked out without answering. The door closed quietly behind them. I sat with my freshly dressed hand in the silence and tried to make sense of it. *** The bell rang at evening. Finally, the sky darkened and with it came the long awaited moment. The ringing of the bells. The first ring went off and I noticed the king looking around a little. Perhaps, he still had that strong intuition that something was wrong and wanted to make sure his little kitten was fine. I smirked because the time to make sure she was fine was long gone. The second bell went off and everyone began to settle down. Quietness and order began to slowly take over the former busy arena. Then, the third and final bell sounded and with it came the quietness of a grave. The arena was so quiet, you could literally hear a pin drop.

Just as he was about to ask another question, his phone started ringing relentlessly. The moment he answered, Gavin's voice practically shattered the speaker. "Ignatius! Have you seen the video in the company group chat? It's gone viral!"

I might as well take their offer. I was about to give a response when I was interrupted by a loud bell ringing through the academy. It was very loud. metal bell? Iron? "What is that?" I asked. "Fuck" Ragnar hissed. "It's time for the first trial." "The first trial?" My voice came out squeakier than I intended. "What first trial?”

“We can slip out right after the bell rings.” The clock ticked down, each second feeling like an eternity. Finally, the bell rang, and the classroom erupted into a flurry of movement. They all wondered when the blue bells were going to come and take them out of this nightmare. Although somehow it was loud enough for the students to hear, they all jumped out of their chairs grabbing the textbook and notes they were doing before. Lavender closed the book having the paper she was doing as the book marker, she slowly got up waiting for the herd to go through, so she didn’t get trampled by them.
