Instead, she reached up and touched my cheek the same way she used to when I was younger, when she needed to be sure I understood something important.
“Come back to us,” she whispered. “No matter what you find out there.”
“I will,” I said, and I meant it with every piece of me. “I won’t be long.”
I picked up my bag, walked through the doorway, and closed the door behind me. The familiar weight of home stayed on one side of the wood, and the world where Rhea had been taken waited on the other.
I didn’t look back. I couldn’t.
She was somewhere out there, scared and alone.
And I was going to bring her back.
