My master. With a racing heart and heaving chest, I searched the room for a place to hide. There were two couches with a huge desk on the other side of the room. Long, thick curtains draped the big window behind it, and there was a large cabinet to the left, a few feet away from the wall. I rushed across the room and hid behind the cabinet. I was still trying to catch my breath when I heard the soft, slow creek of the door. “Are you in here, little pet?”

Not in words. In a feeling. A cold certainty. A truth. It had chosen. It had chosen its heart. It had chosen its heir. It had chosen its anchor. And it was not me. It was her. The voice of the spine echoed in my mind. “She is the core.” My heart stopped. I stared at Marcus. “Your mother…” I whispered. Marcus’s eyes were dark. “She never died,” he said quietly. My blood turned to ice. “She was hidden,” Marcus continued. “In the spine.”

Every breath I took felt heavy, burdened with memories and fears I couldn’t shake. I closed my eyes, willing the ache in my chest to fade, but it lingered stubbornly. "Who the hell even are you? the security men drag both Alexis and Tad away. I rest on the wall, tears rolling down my eyes. He chuckled, "Were you talking to Mike? Did you spill our secret?" Luke was undeniably striking. At school, he was an iceberg, cold and untouchable. But in private, he was warm and almost clingy. In the past, I'd have melted into his arms, blushing. Now I just stepped back, creating distance. "Didn't you want to keep us hidden?" I muttered. His eyes flickered as he caught the edge of my tone. Still, he pressed on with the question that always lingered. "You know we can't go public."

This causes my heart to race and I take a couple deep breaths to calm myself back down as I walk past the second open stall. The third stall door sticks so I have to give it a harder shove to get it to swing open. I release the breath I was holding as I find it to also be empty. The fourth is already open so the only place left that anyone could be hiding is in the large stall here at the end. I stand back as I push the door hard and it swings back, banging against the stone wall on the back side.

She kept her gaze fixed on the glowing numbers above the door, aware of the warmth of his presence at her side. When the doors slid open, she stepped out first, her mind already calculating the quickest detour to lose him. But as she turned down the dimly lit hallway, his voice followed, low and certain. “I’ll figure out what you’re hiding, Cassandra.” She didn’t stop walking. “Good luck, Mr. Knight. You’ll need it.”

“That’s exactly what I thought would happen.” “And I wonder, what has happened to you? What horrible things have you gone through?” “You pity me.” “I’m angry with you.” “…!” “Why now? Why have you been hiding it all this time?” Sophia’s tears spilled even more. Her chest felt so painful, as if a sharp dagger had just pierced her heart. “Why now? Did you think if I saw it earlier, you could avoid me before all of this happened? And now you regret it?” “Haah...” Albert sighed, “You always misunderstand what I say.”

Their attention turned to me instantly, but they seemed more surprised than anything. “I'm sorry,” I said as I rushed to their front door. “Forgive me!” I yelled as I left the small apartment. Instead of going down the hall stairs, I ran up the stairs. I needed to find a place to hide until they gave up on this building. Running up the stairs to the roof, I searched for a place to hide. There weren’t any options on this roof, but I noticed another rooftop with a few hiding options. Dashing across the roof to the edge, I smiled when I saw there wasn’t much of a gap.
