Everyone was drunk or in their room, and she only had to make it the two blocks to her condo.
“Famous last words,” she mumbled.
The sound of her own steps overtook her hearing. Her brain reeled around the sound, reaching out to make sure it was the only noise. Yet below and behind the scrape of her shoes on the rocks, another sound menaced. Dull, steady, moving with her. Once she noticed it, she could not unhear it. Her chest tightened again.
Sidney stopped walking and held her breath in the dark. She strained to hear, to look with her ears through the black around her. Nothing. Silence only massaged by the moving water beside her.
