“I love you, Ethan. But love isn’t enough if we’re not honest with each other.” Ethan finally looked up at her, his eyes filled with a mixture of regret and determination. “You’re right,” he admitted, his voice rough. “We’ve been hiding from the truth for too long. But I’m not ready to give up. Not on us. Not yet.” Just as Sophia was about to respond, the temperature in the room plummeted, and the candles flickered violently. The low, whispering voice returned, echoing around them, “Promises made… promises broken… only one will leave.”

He whispered, highlighting each sentence with a deep thrust. Aurelia's eyes rolled back in her head as he quickened his pace. "Aurelia, please promise me you will never try to leave me" he whispered as he thrust into her. "I promise" Aurelia quickly whimpered. "Promise me you will wait patiently and not do anything stupid. Promise me you will endure this mess for a while and let me sort this out. Promise me you will never give up on your life, ever again" he whispered and continued to thrust into her.

No one spoke immediately, then the eldest among them finally broke the silence. “So You are Roselyn.” “Yes.” I replied. “You’ve lived among us for several days.” “True.” “And you’ve respected our laws.” I nodded. “I’ve tried to.” The elder smiled faintly. “We know.” He rested both hands on the table. “We called you here to let you know that Whispering Haven survives because everyone who lives here makes the same promise.” I immediately remembered the Tree of Promises that Darius had taken me to two days back.

A flash of it, burning in my irises before fading. I whispered into the silence: “You’re still here.” But the words no longer sounded like a plea. They sounded like a promise.

When I was standing right in front of him, I leaned down, bringing my face close to his. “Promised?” I repeated, my voice a low, dangerous whisper. “Let me tell you something about promises.” I straightened up, false promises made by men ringing in my head and my eyes never leaving his. “A promise is a tool. A weapon. Something to give hope to the hopeless and manipulate the desperate. It’s the leash that keeps dogs like you from biting until the master decides it’s time to put you down.”

I whispered. “You won’t,” he said firmly. “I promise.” I wanted to believe him. I wanted to hold onto his promise like a lifeline, but the fear wouldn’t let me. Still, I nodded, forcing myself to meet his gaze. “Okay,” I said quietly. “Let’s do this.” ---

He explained and they listened attentively. “What forbidden promise do you guys have?” Adrian asked. Amana was not able to use her promise and was not able to determine what kind of promise they have. “I have the strengthening promise and my husband has the killing promise where he can kill someone else’s promise and I can make someone else’s promise stronger.” Caselyn stated. They asked them questions and found out things that the academy is hiding. They also found out that outsiders used to be promise users but they can't remember anything about promises because of the poison that was planted inside of them by the higher ups.

‎ ‎I let my hands find his, gripping them tightly as I looked up at him, my heart pounding against my chest. ‎ ‎“Then promise me one thing,” I whispered, my voice barely audible. ‎ ‎“What?” he asked, his tone softer now. ‎ ‎“Promise me that you’ll stop pretending you’re invincible. Don’t shut me out. Please.” ‎ ‎His gaze softened, the intensity of his previous words melting away as he held me in his arms again. “I promise,” he whispered back, pulling me closer. “But I need you to promise me something too.” ‎

Give me a sec. "Ada," I said, speaking aloud and looking down at her. She looked surprised at my use of her name. "What was the kind of poison you think I've been poisoned with? What was the name again?" "I don't think it, I know," she replied with a small roll of her eyes. "It's called Whisperbloom." I hurried and relayed the information to Ethan, who agreed to look into it immediately. "And how do you know that's what I have?" I asked, still a little foggy on the details.

The landscape was alien and foreboding, a surreal amalgamation of shifting shadows and fragmented structures that seemed perpetually on the verge of collapse. The air was thick with an unsettling stillness, broken only by the occasional whisper of forgotten memories.
