My legs ached, and my eyes grew heavy, but the whispers urged me on. By the time dawn was breaking, I was on the verge of collapse from exhaustion. Just when I thought I couldn't take another step, we arrived at a waterfall. The sight of it took my breath away. The cascading water sparkled in the early light, creating rainbows in the mist. It was like something out of a dream, a hidden paradise within the forest. Merilla led me behind the curtain of water, where we discovered a cave filled with ancient symbols that I couldn't decipher. The air inside was cool and filled with the scent of damp earth.

The whisper turned into a yell. “LEAVE! LEAVE! LEAVE! LEAVE!” Echoes of the word leave began to fill the cave, bellowing and bouncing off the cave walls into her ears, almost piercing them. A loud and forceful ringing welled up inside her head, making it unbearable to stay in the cave any longer. Layla heeded the words of the unknown voice and began searching for a way to exit the cave, she didn’t care if she was consumed by the mist; nothing felt more dangerous than this.

Clean. Whispers through the darkness reach me. A soft giggle. A guttural moan. Sounds of pleasure and pain, laughter and sorrow, mingled together in a rush. A breeze lifts my hair from my shoulders, and my fingers begin to ache anew. I’m in the caves. Those ancient, sacred caves that run beneath Veiled Valley. The caves that call Shadowsyngers to what we’ve long called the ascension or the calling. My throat bobs, but it’s impossible to swallow. The darkness begins to flicker. I gasp as I take a single, determined step, and the walls of the cave shine with gems.

It led them deeper into the Dale, into the darkest part of the woods, where the trees grew so closely together, almost all of the sunlight was blocked out. “There,” whispered Sprout. Ahead of them was the mouth of a massive cave. “In the cave?” Asked Hayden. “Yes, Prince, the cave. It’s the Ghostly Grotto. There are spirits within who whisper to travellers to try to get them lost inside so when the cave floods at night, the travellers drown and become ghosts themselves, adding to the whispers, growing the chorus of whispering voices,” explained Sprout theatrically. Titan felt a chill creep through him. He did not like the sound of that at all.

POV EMMA BELLE The Inner Sanctum of the Whispering Falls was a monstrosity of alchemical engineering—a jagged fortress of iron and bone built directly over the geothermal vents of the mountain’s heart. The pup’s mark glowed, casting a crimson light over a crumbled stone archway ahead—the entrance to the Whispering Caves, if Lira’s map was right.

Liora, eyes tracing the map, mused, "The beacon leads to the Whispering Caves. Legends speak of echoes that tell tales of old and shadows that come to life." Altair cast her a wry grin. "More legends and tales? Seems we're always chasing those." She playfully nudged him. "Maybe the tales chase us. Ever think of that?" A hint of a smile played on my lips. "Regardless of legends or tales, our path is clear. We head to the Whispering Caves." As the forest began to thin, an eerie stillness enveloped the surroundings. The entrance to the caves loomed ahead, guarded by ancient stone statues with inscriptions lost to time.

“The Whispering Valley, huh? Sounds... ominous. Let’s hope it’s just a name.” The group set out the next morning, the map carefully folded and tucked into Crane’s satchel. The Whispering Valley was a day’s journey from the manor, its name a relic of the eerie winds that echoed through its cliffs. As they approached, the faint hum of the key grew stronger, its light pulsing in rhythm with the instability that awaited them. The valley was shrouded in mist, its jagged cliffs casting long shadows that shifted with the wind. The hum of the key became a low, resonant thrum, guiding them toward the fracture. Emma felt the familiar weight of the balance pressing against her, testing her resolve.

Luna felt a sense of awe and gratitude for being able to witness such natural wonders.
