I said. I left Lily and the guards at the camp and began the climb. The air was freezing, my breath coming in short, painful gasps. The violet light tried to flare up, to warm my body, but I forced it down. I wanted to face this as myself—as Esmeralda. The Cave of Whispers was a small, dark opening near the summit. I stepped inside, the silence pressing against my ears like a physical weight. I sat down on the cold stone floor and closed my eyes.

"There are voices of people that linger when their lives are unjustly taken from this earth," Crystal said. "Voices of blood, and people who can't get justice for themselves. These voices belong to the souls of the dead, and the innocent. They can haunt you, torment you, and even try to kill you if they are strong enough. They are like air. They can't be seen. They can't be touched. They can be felt, but mostly through one's hearing. They glide in the air. The strong wind can stop them, and so can fire. Nature doesn't necessarily stop them, but anything too loud for you to hear them can temporarily stop them. And that is why they are called whispers.

“Sea caves?” He leaned forward, lowering his voice as if sharing a secret. “There’s a secluded cove, just a short boat ride from here. Locals call it the Aphrodite Caves. The water glows in shades of sapphire and gold when the sun hits, and the acoustics…” His grin widened. “Let’s just say, everything feels… amplified.” Angela laughed, narrowing her eyes playfully. “Amplified, hm? This sounds suspiciously like a line.”

The moment it struck midnight, darkness slipped into the cave and a cold gush of wind swept past us, followed by chilling whispers of ancient words and strange giggling. I stretched out my hand in the darkness and gripped a soft, trembling hand that felt like Valerie’s. I heard a sharp gasp beside me, and my heart constricted in worry. I held onto the hand, daring not to let go. Suddenly, the whispers ceased, and the darkness that covered us darted away. “Woah!” Jeremy’s gasp caused me to look up. My eyes darted around the place, and I felt my jaw drop at the number of large crystals that filled the cave.

But the end of what was unclear. I searched the abyss and found nothing. Fear overwhelmed me; images started to appear one by one. Cleo, Prue, work, mum, and the last was Damian. Each disappeared as if they were smoke. Whisps filled the air and dissipated one at a time until there was only one left. The whisp from Damian floated across to me. It morphed into a guiding light as the ticking became faster. Something deep inside felt the pull; I needed to follow it. Step by step, one foot in front of another, I followed his light. It led me to a door in the middle of the abyss. The door stood solid in front of me as the whisp passed through it and disappeared.
