Leo was grinning, batting at a stray droplet of water that had escaped a canteen, watching it wobble like a translucent jellyfish. But it was Luna who caught my breath. Her hair, as white as mine, fanned out around her head like a halo of silk. Her eyes weren't on the Earth, and they weren't on the cabin. She was staring fixedly at the Moon—the glowing, jagged crescent that loomed ahead of us like a curved ivory blade. "It’s calling," Luna whispered. Her voice had that hollow, rhythmic quality that usually preceded one of her prophecies. "The Great White Wolf isn't on the Moon, Mama. She is the Moon. And she’s angry that the metal-men are crawling on her skin."

It was already night, but I could recognize everything inside my room, for it was awash in the silver moonlight which would only disappear if I closed the windows. I could see the solid dark shadows that indicates the carriage house and the stables. The moon, like a thin wafer of pale lemon, hung impaled upon the slender shaft of a solitary pine standing on the grassy hill, but now covered with snow. Everything below seemed luminous, glowing dreamlike in the cold moonlight. The hither and thither movements of the cold air chilled me, so I closed the windows and lowered the pink drapes. I turned on the lights, took my pink backpack and notes to the desk, and answered my assignments.

Before him stood the embodiment of a legend long believed to be mere folklore—the last moonlit wolf. The wolf, resplendent in its ethereal glow, emanated an otherworldly luminescence that illuminated the night. Its fur, a tapestry of soft white and gossamer silver, shimmered with a celestial brilliance, casting a spell upon all who beheld it. I staggered toward the window, palms sweaty, heart beating so hard it hurt. Moonlight coiled around my wrist like a ribbon. Sunfire burned under my skin like a warning. I pressed my hand against the window. The surface was cold. Not like glass. Like absence. Kael’s hand met mine from the other side. For the briefest moment, the white room went silent. Not humming. Not correcting. Listening. Kael’s eyes locked onto mine through the static. And I saw it clearly: the white light around him wasn’t just deletion. It was a door.

Kane ruffled Jim’s hair approvingly, while Luke fussed over Fiona like she was made of glass, murmuring for her to rest. I stood there, invisible. They were the perfect family—warm, whole, united. And I? I was the spare part, the forgotten shadow. Not a single glance. Not a word. So I left. I walked toward Moon Lake, the place I’d begged them to take me for years. "Next summer," they’d always said, "when things are less busy." Lies. Empty promises. Now, I’d go alone. But my body betrayed me. Halfway there, my wolf gave out—her strength spent, her spirit broken. My legs buckled, and the world was spinning.

It wasn’t signed. Kael would never let me go. Lucien would only follow if it amused him. But the words burned in my mind until I could think of nothing else. When the moon hung high, I slipped out, hood drawn low. The streets of Ebonveil were slick with fog, lamplight bending in the mist. Just movement and night and the perfect synchronicity of two bodies moving as one through darkness. Moonlight spills across the valley as we race along its winding roads, illuminating the landscape in silver and shadow. The ward shimmers at the edges of my vision, a translucent dome enclosing this hidden world. Within its boundaries, ancient trees reach skyward, their leaves whispering secrets as we pass. Fields of knee-high grass ripple like water, parting and reforming in our wake. Stone formations rise from the earth, their rune-carved surfaces catching moonlight in patterns that shift and dance as our perspective changes.

I figure that's good enough. I tilt my head down and look through my camera's viewfinder again. The sight immediately makes me hold my breath for a second. The almost-full moon is there in all its radiant splendor. Its silvery glow weaves a spell over the night, and finally I reach forward to click the shutter. As I lose myself in the rhythmic trance of capturing lunar beauty, a distant wolf's howl becomes a haunting melody through the woods. Abruptly, the lens darkens, and for a second I wonder if a black cloud has suddenly obscured my view. When I pull back to check though, I gasp.
