Beneath the Façade
If I tried, the truth would tumble out.
His eyes lingered on me a moment longer before he grunted and moved away. The sound of his footsteps faded toward the kitchen, then the fridge door opened with a hollow thud.
I let out the breath I’d been holding and rushed through the rest of the shelf, my hands moving faster than my brain. The moment the last book clicked into place, I stood, wiped my palms against my skirt, and hurried to my room.
Lock.
I turned the key, leaned back against the door, and slid down until I was sitting on the floor, my chest heaving like I’d just run for miles.
