I don’t know about you, but I can’t leave this place fast enough.” Melody hugged her chest as she allowed her father to lead her into the mess house. “I admit, I’ll be glad to see the last of this place.” When they were inside the main room and the door was shut behind them, she turned to her father and asked, “Do you think these ghosts, or whatever they are, are affecting the sheep?” Adam cocked his head in thought. “In what way, daughter?” “Their meat. Do you think they are altering the meat in some way? I’m just trying to understand what it is that’s made Ian change so.”

I checked my phone and saw a text message from the electricity utility company. The electricity bill for this month was three thousand eight hundred dollars. I stared at that number for a full minute. Three thousand eight hundred dollars?! I lived alone. How could my electricity usage possibly be so high?! I suddenly remembered something. The faucet turned on by itself. The television switched on in the middle of the night. Meals appeared like clockwork every single day! Since when did paranormal activities run up the electric bill? Pure rage shot through me. I leaped out of bed, snatched my phone, and screamed into the empty room, “Nathaniel Simmons! Get out of here right now!

I hereby rename this level ‘Cozy Dorm: Grandma and Her Ghost Grandkids’! Looking at these strange but clear-eyed ghost kids, the chill left from my adopted son’s betrayal finally melted away. [System error resolved…] The cold system alert sounded again, and a soft white glow descended from above, enveloping me completely. The ghost kids tensed, clustering around me, eyes full of worry and hesitation. “Granny, are you leaving?” “Don’t go, Granny!” “What will we do if you leave?” I looked at each of those trusting faces before me as I felt the force pulling me.

Alice had always been a thorn between us—sharp, immovable, impossible to ignore or remove. I looked at Grayson now and wondered: if he knew I was dead, would he feel relieved that he was finally free of me? Grayson's phone rang. He answered it, not bothering to put it on speaker. I drifted closer, curious. Could it be someone calling to report my death? I studied his face intently, waiting to see his reaction when he learned I was gone. But when I glanced at the screen, I froze. The caller ID displayed my name. The voice that came through the line was unmistakably mine.

Manuel said and he places her in the bath tub. “ You mean you have bath for me so many times? When was that? She asks. “ Don’t even start honey “ he says. “Don’t worry. Everything is set. She’s weak now. Tired. She can barely move. Just bring what you promised.” “I have it,” I said, tapping my bag. “Three glass cups for our toast, and the drink. We’ll celebrate tonight.” “Good,” Ghost replied. “Come quickly. I don’t want to waste any more time.” “I won’t be late,” I said. Before ending the call, I added, “And make sure there are no mistakes. I don’t want her speaking ever again.” He didn’t respond. Just ended the call. I smiled again and put my phone back in my bag. My hands were shaking, but not from fear.

I carefully set a heat pad under his arm and turned on the television before checking the flow rate of the infusion. After attending to these tasks, I turned around to see the stunned trio looking at me. I could do this with my eyes closed. "Aren't you... scared?" The comment section went wild. "What’s going on? The ghost is supposed to ask the player if there is something wrong with him, and if you can’t answer, he strangles you with the IV infusion cable! Go on, ask the question!" "Hey, nurse... what's wrong with me? Why haven’t I recovered?"

Laura was still not answering any of my calls forever, and between the Umbrella man’s complete silence and my woman’s disappearance, I didn't have any idea what to make of anything or where I fucking stood! It was like the ground had been pulled away from underneath me and I was tottering in the air looking like a damned Walmart version clown. “Heck, that's not any way to ask a gentleman to-” Ghost started, scratching at the thin stubble on his chiseled jaw before I cut him off, not having the patience to hear the joke through.

I had to promise him fries or we’d never leave. She laughed softly and typed back: Alli: Fries are a fair trade. Tell him I want pics of the goats. I need the full report. Johnny ❤️: You got it, mama. ❤️ She pressed the phone to her chest for a moment, smiling to herself. That was the thing about Johnny—he always found a way to slip into her heart when she wasn’t looking. And she didn’t want to push him out anymore. The house buzzed with the stillness of a moment too full. And that’s when she heard it—the softest creak of floorboards from down the hall. The ghost of memory. Or maybe just nerves.

Earlier than usual — the garden was still in late afternoon gold rather than the purple-into-dark I had come to associate with his arrival — which meant either his schedule had changed or he had heard about the broadcast and had come to see what I would do with it. Probably the second one. He came in and looked at me and I looked back and neither of us said anything for a moment. Then he moved to his chair and sat and looked at the garden. "You watched the news," he said. "The housekeeper left the remote." "I know." Of course he knew. "Ghost is dead," I said. My voice came out even. Professionally even — the kind of even that requires more work than it sounds like. "Yes," he said. "According
