POV: Rhea Mooncrest "Micah, look at me! Look at what you’ve done!" Rhea’s scream was nearly swallowed by the roar of the violet flames rising around the Whispering Stones. She was pinned to the central monolith, the silver chains biting into her wrists, glowing with a dull, suppressed light. The heat was a living thing, licking at the hem of her tunic, smelling of bitter sage and the oil the witches had poured onto the pyre.

I would die hated, alone, for something I did not do. Then the sky changed. A blood-red moon burst through the clouds, bathing everything in crimson light. Gasps rose from the crowd. The flames around me suddenly felt different, like they were feeding something inside my chest instead of burning me. I screamed again, but this time it was not just pain. Something cracked open in my back. Sharp, tearing agony. Then pressure. Then... release. Huge ancient wings exploded from my back. Dark, leathery, powerful. They stretched wide, knocking the flames away from me in one powerful beat. The ropes snapped like a thread. I hovered a few feet above the burning stake, wings keeping me up.

In a split second, my knuckles connected with a bony jaw. The collision was followed with a loud shriek and then a body being hauled some meters away. I closed the distance between us almost at the same instant and rained down punches on the guy's face. All I saw in my eyes was a red haze and nothing else. Another kind of rage and anger had filled me so much that I angrily enjoyed punching the guy's face. It was like the person had snapped some kind of a trip wire in me that could never be reconnected. I couldn't control what I was feeling at the moment, I just wanted to beat this person endlessly for pissing me off. Blood spurt out of his nose under the constant punches I rained on him maki

The next shot rings out. Control snapped as always sending heat coursing through my blood. The pain always feels so real. Flames leap across my vision. The ground below me turning to ash. The tree turned to char as the flames dance across the branches. Swallowing it whole. The swing falls and crumbles. Seeing the house begin to burn, the flowers long gone, the fire blazes around me, and my world goes black. Pain is the strongest reminder I was there. I open my eyes and look at my surroundings. Ashe covers the metal in black smudges. Yeah, I’m home. Letting my breathing return to normal I reach out and unlock the handle and push on the iron door.

My hands were raised with my palms up, and fire emitted from them, but in between them, shards of big thorn-like spikes were dancing around.

I raised my palm and said,” let me think. I looked around the room trying to come up with a plan. The fire burning in the fireplace caught my eye. A moth flew towards it dazzled by the flame. It turned to ashes the moment its wings touched the fire. If the fire had managed to move back just by an inch the moth would have been saved. The fire is not capable of maintaining distance but I can. His pain-filled eyes flashed before me and I felt a pang of regret but I had to do this. I couldn’t let Alex burn like the moth just because he wanted to come near me.

It can’t be there. Gravel scrapes behind me. I curl my wings snugly against my back, gripping the fence tighter and looking around. I don’t need to see through the fog to know the maze of the tall stone buildings and metal roofs beyond the cobblestone yard behind me—but what moves through them is another story.
