It turned the dark garden into a nightmare of shifting, red shadows. I could feel the heat on my skin, stinging and dry like a desert wind. The West Wing of Moore Crest was no longer a building. It was a wall of pure fire. Thick, black smoke curled into the night sky like heavy snakes. My heart hammered against my ribs so hard it felt like it might actually break.

The thing kept up until it was easy to tell that it was a person. Wings spread from its back stretching out wide. With one movement it used them to blow the flames towards the warriors that were standing too close. Flames engulfed them in minutes and then they were gone. With another great batting the wings stopped the flames altogether and the thing was all that remained. Elaina watched in horror as it began to move forward taking in the scene around it. A laugh rumbled from it making the hairs on the back of Elaina’s neck stand up.

We had to make our move, or we would never leave. I closed my eyes for a moment, feeling the warmth in my chest, the flicker of fire that burned there. My hands clenched into fists, and with a deep breath, I focused. The fire rose within me, wrapping around my arms and flowing down to my palms. I pressed my hands against the stone door, the heat intensifying, and I felt the air shift around us. The stone began to crack, then shatter as I pushed harder, willing the door to break.

Her eyes burned, not mortal, not borrowed, but as twin cores of dawn. Every line of her body blazed with raw sovereignty, not given, not inherited, claimed. Freya lifted the Sword, her voice rising steady and final above the storm. It was not a scream. It was a vow. “This flame was never yours. It was waiting for me.”

This wasn’t something that could be solved with a weapon. Spitfire, small but fierce, soared overhead, her wings cutting through the air with a speed that belied her size. She opened her mouth and unleashed a torrent of flame that burned through the cold air, setting the ground around the skinwalker alight. The fire crackled, lighting up the darkened sky as the skinwalker stumbled back, momentarily stunned. But then, with a terrifying roar, he threw something heavy at her, a cinder block, the size of a small boulder. It flew through the air with unnatural speed, propelled by the skinwalker’s supernatural strength.

Then—an explosion. The fire surged, twisting unnaturally, moving with purpose, as though it were alive. A wave of heat slammed into me. I turned my body, shielding the child as I rolled out of the way, the flames licking at my back. Pain flared, sharp and searing. My wolf howled in agony, but I clenched my teeth. I could heal. The child couldn’t. The fire withdrew as quickly as it had come. I forced myself to my feet, gripping the girl tightly in my arms.

"He fell! No one survives the obsidian shards!" The glowing hand gripped the ledge harder. The stone floor began to melt. Then, another hand reached up. It wasn't black obsidian anymore. It was red, like lava cooling into rock. With a roar that shook the glass windows of the palace, the figure pulled himself up. It was Alaric. But he looked like a nightmare. The black stone that once covered his arms and face was now glowing with a dark, angry fire. His eyes were no longer solid glass; they were two burning coals. Steam rose from his skin as he stood up, towering over us.

Stripes. Burning across my body like fire. The air itself seemed to change. The wolves hesitated. Just for a second. That was their mistake. I moved. Faster than before. Stronger. Unstoppable. I tore through them. No hesitation now. No strategy. Just dominance. One after another. They fell. Until only one remained. Celdor stepped forward. Finally. I tilted my head slightly, blood dripping from my jaw. “You should have stayed hidden.” He didn’t respond.
