But before the hunter could pull the trigger, a blur of white fur barreled into him, sending the crossbow clattering to the ground. Xander’s wolf emerged from the chaos like a force of nature, his ice-blue eyes blazing as he ripped the weapon from the hunter’s grasp. I hold my aching side, bracing myself to keep going, run it off, when I notice two things at once. A few feet away, under the tall oak where Mari had been perched, there’s a white rabbit, upright on her haunches, staring at me, frozen in place. And my wolf isn’t fighting me for our skin.
