Frank Kilburn, Alpha of the Vagas Moon Pack, fumed because for hours now his wolves tried to find some proof that he could use to push the Twilight Wolf Pack and their annoying leader out of a region before they discovered what he was doing. He needed the white wolf back, too.

The three-ton wolf let out a low, tired sigh, his head lowering onto his paws as the violet fire in his sockets settled back into a peaceful, watchful ember. Cassian shouted, his shadows expanding to cover the entire deck as a second beam struck his shield. ​He was holding back the weight of the sun, his teeth bared in a snarl of agony. The shield was glowing white-hot where the beams hit, the shadows evaporating into mist. ​“I can’t reach it!” Winnie cried, her hands glowing as she tried to weave a defense. “The air is too thick with their interference! They’ve created a cage of light around the ship!” ​I looked at the pack. They were huddled together, their fur scorched, their eyes filled with a primal terror. We were wolves. We were meant for the forest and the hunt. We were not meant to be target practice for a man in a flying machine.

I sniffled. “Thank me when we reach the other side. We're not free yet.” As if to accent his point, the ancient tree beneath us squealed like shifting ice and the center bowes. Skye stumbled and swore softly. Over his shoulder, I could see just how perilously close the wolves from the Shaded Paws Pack were to locking their slavering jaws on our heels. “Look out!” A squeal left me as the wolf closest to our position leaped. In a blinding series of movements, Skye placed me on my feet, whirled around to catch the attacker by the throat, and slammed him down onto the surface of the bridge.

Jasper could *not* be allowed to reveal anything. After Phantom departed, Black Shark stood and signaled his men. “Prepare my aircraft.
