I could feel the irritation rise from my wolf at my weak reply. Time and time again she wanted to pounce on them for stepping all over us but my promise to my father held me back. I wouldn't do anything to make the family fall apart, I didn't necessarily need to be close with anyone. "Hmph!" She dumped the jar of milk and folded her hands under her bosom. "You seem to be making smart choices today. If you were this polite in your everyday life, maybe you would've come across your mate already." Mate. Was that all there was to a wolf?

He nodded as if he were listening, but then boldly asked, “So, what are you looking for in a mate? Loyal? Strong? Could protect you…if you needed it?” Mate? On top of everything, who uses the word ‘mate?’ Except... no! They no longer existed. She looked at him from the corner of her eyes. “I’m sorry, but what does this have to do with my creating a social presence for D.E.N. Inc.?”

It gave her different results, making her more confused. -A mate means sexual partners of animals?- She read. Why did Isaac say that I am his mate? What does it mean? Does it mean we are told to be mated? Are we meant to be together? But he wanted to kill me.

Then Hale added, almost casually, “You need a mate.” My stomach did something unpleasant. Mate. The word wasn’t romantic the way humans used it. It sounded… official. Like a job title. Like a contract. My mind jumped—unwanted—to Maddox’s hand on my waist yesterday. The heat. His face when he’d shut his eyes like he was wrestling something down. My pulse kicked in my throat. Mate. What the hell was a mate? Was this a wolf term for “wife”? “Political partner”? “Breeding program”? Something worse?

There are no part of this story that are irrelevant to the big plot. Thirdly, this author also would like to inform you since most of the characters are British and they do often say the word ‘mate’, please note that it refers to ‘friend/pal’ but when the word starts with a capital letter ‘Mate’ it refers to wolf’s mate/soulmate. I asked, breaking the silence. Kaia made another face at Saige before looking at me, “Mates is short for soulmates. Our parents always talk about being each other soulmates and since Saige obviously still can’t put together a proper sentence, she says mates. Basically, for the game, we’re parents and they’re parents” she explained. Well that makes sense. “Oh! Okay! Then we’re mates then!” I said happily. Kaia laughed and rolled her eyes, “Only in this game. We can’t possibly be mates in real life” she said before walking to a nearby bench to put her book down. These kids are funny. I don’t know what they are but they seem like great people.
