Walter: Not our pack. His last text throws me into action, my bare feet slipping into those same combat boots, I refuse to lace up. He picks up after just one ring, the exhaustion thick in his greeting. The clap of my boots against the hardwood, nearly drowns out his sigh and the shuffling in the background. But I can hear it loud and clear. Disaster just struck for the second night in a row.

I continue, my voice ringing through the night. I descend the steps, each one deliberate and slow, drawing closer to them. My boots strike the ground quietly, yet it still sounds like a heartbeat in the tense silence. A silence that seeps across the grounds. "Shift once while wearing them and bye bye boots." I give him a small shoulder push to get him moving. Once he's settled, I twist around, bringing my legs up, and begin pulling on the leather. I can tell as soon as my feet slide home that they fit perfectly. "They don't look any different than the military boots I gave you." "Sacrilege." I run my fingers over the leather. "These babies have PVC air-cushioned soles. They're indestructible." King whistles. "One emergency Shadow Warrior shift and you'll discover you shouldn't be too excited about footwear, and when that happens, no footwear is indestructible."

They were like puppies licking my boots. "Kill her!"

She smiled. “I saw that.” Her teeth where so white it’s almost blinding to look at. I looked down at her feet. She was wearing combat boots that were pure jet black. I don’t understand why girls now a day’s like combat boots and boys’ cargo pants as well as our polo t-shirts. “Combat boots make it easier to walk and run in rain.” Daylight said as if hearing what I was thinking. “How…” I was cut off. “How did I know? I’m not a mind reader, Ian, but I can read expressions.” She said.

Yet today, my battle was personal, and I knew I had to face it alone. I sat on the edge of my bed, staring at the boots I’d discarded the night before. Slowly, I reached for them, my movements stiff and deliberate. Pain shot through my side as I bent down, but I gritted my teeth and forced myself to pull the boots on, one at a time. The leather felt heavier than usual, like the weight of my burdens had seeped into them.

Efaffion’s anger was answer enough. “They had me cleaning boots. One hundred pairs of boots! That’s two hundred boots in total – well, slightly less, some of their army have only one leg or one foot – anyway! Near enough two hundred boots,” he huffed again. “Caked in mud that I am quite certain our dear witch has spelled to make it stick.” Lily turned to look at him, though her expression did not change. In fact, she could have been looking at nothing for all the recognition in her eyes.

I jolt into in-depth cringe mode as I check that the heel of my right boot is still good. It’s an old shoe, but I love it because it’s the most comfortable on my feet and perfect for missions such as this. I probably should have thought far and brought some sneakers, but I’d lost my head in the throes of the party. See where that got me. Now, I’m ruining my favourite pair of faux-leather boots. Way to go! “Won’t you ever talk to me again?” Wade asks again, and I glower at his persistence. Can he keep shut and let us get to the car in time without any problems before trying to cook up a conversation I’m not interested in holding?
