I told Cathy. “Are you planning on writing to any of them?” I gently shook my head. “Not yet. What I need to do is begin writing up a draft of the bill that I want to have passed through the royal court. It will be a good way to sort out all the major points that need to be adjusted in the current laws.” Cathy gave me a pointed look. “May I suggest that as you begin planning out your proposal you try and keep things as light as possible?” I parted my lips to protest but was swiftly cut off by Cathy’s raised hand.

The proposal was six pages. He was aware, as he wrote it, that six pages was not a long proposal. Alexander worked with documents that ran to three hundred pages and found things to mark in all of them. But six pages was the right length for this, because the argument was not complicated and the data was sufficient and padding it for the appearance of thoroughness would have been exactly the kind of move that Alexander would mark as a revision point. The argument was structured in four parts.

His voice had the specific energy of someone who had finished something they had been working on for a long time and wasn't sure yet what to do with the absence of it. "The whole thing?" I said. I put them on my bedside table beside the two mugs and looked at them and understood I wasn't ready yet. Not because I was afraid. Just because some things needed the right moment and this wasn't it. The right moment would announce itself. It always did. In the afternoon I submitted the Biotek proposal. Not the Knight Industries partnership version. The independent funding body version. Primary. On its own merits. With my name on it and the corrected methodology and the version four introduction that I had spent three weeks finding the right words for.
