He circled around me carefully, staying just out of reach of my teeth. "Shift," he commanded. I bared my teeth at him. "I said shift." His voice was harder now. Alpha tone. The kind of voice that was supposed to make wolves obey. My wolf wanted to listen. Every instinct in my body wanted to submit and shift and do whatever this man said. But I was not some pack wolf who had been trained to obey since birth. I was a rogue. I had survived twenty years by not submitting to anyone. And if I shifted now, I would be naked. In front of two strange men. In a dungeon.

What did they want? Suddenly, a low, menacing growl cut through the night. The rogues froze, their ears twitching. “What was that?” one of them whispered. Before anyone could answer, a dark figure leapt from the shadows. A massive wolf-its fur black as midnight-charged at the rogues with terrifying speed. “Kill him!” one of them shouted. But the wolf was too fast. It tore into them with brutal precision, fangs flashing and claws slicing through fur and flesh. The rogues howled in pain, their grips on me loosening.

“I still have to survive the council first. I don’t know much about your world, but it’s obvious that rogues are not liked. I didn’t realize before that I wasn’t only protecting my freedom, I was also breaking your laws.” I might as well begin using the lies needed to build my innocent image. His eyes stayed sharp, and I was not sure he believed me. “Rogues are usually trouble. Without the stability of a pack, they lose control of their beasts. We were not created to live alone. It affects the animal’s instincts and mind. But you are very different. You are one of the most stable rogue shifters I’ve ever seen who has lived without a pack since a young age. The sound of his shift was thunder in the small space. I pressed myself against the back wall of the cave, and my legs gave out. The stone bit into my back.
