Xander growled before they heard one last smack. Aiden stared at the stairs for a moment before turning around and scooting his chair back toward the table. Aiden picked up his fork and shoved another bite of his omelette into his mouth. “I think Xander's finally met his match,” Thaddeus said. “Those two are perfect for each other,” Zendaya said before laughing. “Shit, they're a match made in heaven! One likes to pull pranks, and the other likes his lame-ass dad jokes. That's a match made in heaven!” Marcus said, and all three began laughing.

SELENA POV My eyes found Vanessa immediately. She stood a few feet from the bed, exhaustion evident on her face, yet that familiar gentleness still sat in her expression. Then my gaze shifted to Xander. He looked terrible. His beard had grown out, his eyes were bloodshot, his shirt wrinkled, and for the first time since a long while, Alexander Blackwood looked human. Something isn’t right. “You were last seen together. When did she leave you?” I relate everything that happened up until the point that I started feeling my chest constrict. I don’t go into full details on that but I notice his hold grew tighter when he figured what happened after. Without letting myself think about it, I place my hand over one of his and feel as he relaxes against me, his hold loosens and he goes back to drawing mindless patterns around my hips. “Maybe she went out, she was talking about going shopping.” Xander shakes his head. His face is passive for all but there is a hollow look in his eyes. That makes my heart ache.
