I look between them, shaking my head, then I walk over to the table and take a seat. “Yeah, I did. I’m Xander, Zion’s better-looking brother by the way.” If you say so. He looks over at Zion. “And she’s blond. Why did I imagine her as a redhead, maybe the attitude?” Xander continues. “Zion wasn’t wrong, you really don’t shut up.”

A knock broke the silence, and I turned as the door opened to reveal Xander, strolling in with his usual relaxed grin. “Hey,” he greeted, dropping into the chair across from me. I gave him a nod, my gaze lingering on the screen a moment longer before I shifted my focus to Xander. But he’d noticed. As always, his sharp gaze flickered to the monitor, zeroing in on the feed showing Arianna in her room. A faint smirk tugged at his lips. “So…” he began, leaning back, his eyes narrowing playfully. “Why’d you make her an exclusive, hmm?”

My voice shook off, sounding far worse than usual. "My babies..." Others nurses wiped tears from their own eyes. They all looked heartbroken, the entire room felt heavy with sadness. Then suddenly...The nurses stopped moving. All of them were looking at the door. I followed their gaze and froze. Xander stood there. His wide shoulders bulled into the doorway. His dark clothes were stained with dirt and blood. His face looked exhausted, but his eyes...His eyes were locked on me.

I pointed out quietly. "Touché. But I did it for a bet. Him? Who knows—maybe he *is* the dog." I laughed, almost forgetting the storm still churning inside me. Until—through the crowd of passing students—I saw *him*. Xander. He descended the library steps, dressed in a black jacket and a gray scarf wrapped around his neck like armor. His gaze stayed fixed ahead, unwavering. And when we were just a few feet apart, there was no smile. No nod. No acknowledgment that we had ever shared a night, a pain... a secret.

“Laura!” Xander’s voice called for me echoing around the dining room. I glanced up away from my drawing book to see his adorable face grinning at me. Xander was the son of my Alpha, my future Alpha and I was 99% sure my destined mate. He had a mop of dark brown messy hair and striking green eyes that he got from his mother the Luna Ashly. He gestured with his hand for me to follow him as he raced out of the room. I giggled to myself as my heart fluttered wondering what had got him all riled up. I followed him with haste, thinking about how lucky I was to have been taken in by the Alpha and Luna after my parent's deaths.

It makes me want to cry and laugh and start a fight for joy. Xander stands inside the chalked ring, stripped to the waist. He’s not the bulkiest wolf in the room, but he also doesn’t need to be. He wears the scar across his shoulder like a sentence he learned from rather than a boast. He catches Rose’s eye and the grin that wants to take his face splits him right down the middle. Calder is all angles and impatience. He’s built like a stack of decisions no one argues with and he paces the far edge of the circle as if motion equals momentum and stares at Xander as if he can make him smaller with focus alone.

Mum, this is Ariande, my fiancee." Xander introduced.

As our hands met, something unspoken passed between us—the quiet recognition of kindred souls. Some people never grow close even after years. Whereas, others need only a moment. Within minutes, she was calling me Kat, and I also learned that she, Jaxon, and Xander had grown up together. They slipped into my office, planted something in my drawer, then ducked into the restroom. I frowned, narrowing my eyes trying to see the figure's face. “Pause,” Xander said. The screen froze on a side profile, just enough light hit the man’s face. My mouth went dry. “Is that…” Xander’s jaw was clenched. “Yes.” It was Mr. Hale. I stared at the screen. “This can’t be right. That’s, he’s your father’s friend. You trusted him.” I looked at Xander, his eyes looked so sad. I wanted to reach out to comfort him, but it I couldn't do that, not yet.
