I went to the kitchen. Liyana was standing on a stool her hands covered in flour and her face was serious. She was cutting out cookie shapes. Stars, hearts, a bunny that looked like her rabbit. "Mommy!" She smiled. "Look! I made a bunny!" I went over to her. I kissed her flour-dusted cheek. "It is baby." "Can we put sprinkles on it?" "Whatever you want." She beamed. I stood beside her. I helped her sprinkle colored sugar on the cookies.

Every laugh and every casual comment from Phoebe was like a knife in my chest, and I couldn't stop bleeding out from it. When Lila's dessert cookies finally appeared on the table, I fought to keep myself composed. The twins grinned with every bite, clearly enjoying the cookie overload of chocolate, caramel, and every kind of candy Lila had mixed in. They chuckled as Lila explained, "I thought you were younger! These cookies were supposed to be for kids, but I guess teens can enjoy candy overload just as much." Hunter grinned and nudged his sister. "We're fifteen, not five. But I'm not complaining."

Family could not be neglected. Upon my arrival home, the delightful aroma of cookies baking filled the air. Some things never seemed to change. For a brief moment, I allowed myself to push everything else aside—the investigation, Harold, Amanda, the photos.

I hate how most of them tasted but I knew it was just the kind of snacks Lily liked. Weird snacks. Her eyes went wide like I'd handed her a million dollars, and she clutched the keychain to her chest and immediately tried to pry open the cookie tin with her tiny fingers. I helped her open it, and she shoved a crown-shaped cookie into her mouth and grinned at me with crumbs falling down her chin. “What happened to your finger, baby?” She giggled. “I took needle.” She laughed again. “Lily, needles are bad, didn't you promise to be good for me?”

From my seated position, the cookies are at perfect eye level, and against my better judgment, I pick one off the top of the pile. It's dark brown and brittle. A few pieces flick off as I lower the cookie closer to the small plate my cup of coffee sits on. Burnt doesn't begin to describe the abomination in my hand. It looks like she put the cookie through torture. "What kind are they?" I ask before bringing the cookie to my lips. "Chocolate chip." Tabitha grins, looking down at the plate. "They're a little burnt." A little burnt is an understatement. That's like saying the Titanic nudged an icicle.

Lily squealed as she rushed into the alcove, chocolate covering her face. “Someone has a shadow,” Austin grumbled. I grinned and knelt in front of Lily. “How was your cookie?” “I got you one.” “You did?” She nodded and slipped her hand into her pocket, pulling out the crushed remnants of a cookie and holding out her palm. “Oops.” I laughed. “It’s okay, baby. Let’s get you cleaned up and find your dad, okay?” “Glue, babe,” Austin said as I stood. I rose up on my tiptoes and kissed him quickly. “Glue, honey.”
