Each wave hit harder than the last, and still he stayed upright, shoulders squared, gaze unwavering.
Zade lost count of how many times his nails cut into his palms.
When it finally ended, Xander collapsed to one knee again, breath ragged, sweat slicking his skin. The collar powered down but remained locked in place.
“Take him to medical,” Hale said casually. “Let this be remembered.”
The crowd dispersed slowly, shaken and silent.
Zade didn’t move.
Not until the arena emptied.
Not until Hale was gone.
He followed the med unit down the corridor, keeping his distance until the guards peeled away. Only then did he slip into the room, locking the door behind him.
