Her knee shifted, just slightly, and the book slipped free like it had been waiting for this moment. Her hand shot out. Too late. The book dropped. It hit the ground with a solid thud that echoed through the garden, loud enough to wake the dead. The figure halted. Silence swallowed everything. And then—Zayla suddenly developed muscle pull in her ribs.

Zoe stared at the book, her fingers hovering over its worn cover, tracing the cracks in the leather and the faint symbols etched into its spine. It felt… alive. Not in a way she could explain, but there was something ancient about it—something that pulsed beneath the surface, waiting to be uncovered. “unlucky contestants…shelf two, book thirteen.” It sounded oddly like a personal note. My curiosity won out and I skimmed my fingers along the spines of the books until I chose one at random. I pulled out a medium-sized book, a deep shade of navy blue. Earthen twine was wrapped around the book, and there was a picture on the front. “What the bloody hell is that?” I moved away from Ryker, my eyes were solely fixated on the book. Wiping away the shattered glasses, I did not care if it would hurt me. Once it was clean, I read the book to Ryker. “It is the Book of The Damned.” All I wanted was to get a hold of that book and satisfy my curiosity but when I did, I could feel the power surging from the book, my hands were painfully attached to it. Then the book opened, forcing my palm to hold it up the pages started to flip rapidly. So many images flashed through my mind but none of which I recalled. The book slammed shut and I blinked. I turned to Ryker and swallowed before finding my voice to speak, “Did you see that?”

I'll call you when we're done. Other students began to fill the auditorium, making the place although slowly, noisier and hotter in temperature. A fat student that had the shape of an hard-boiled egg sat in the seat next to him minutes before they commenced. Behind his sat a girl with eyeglasses so thick he suspected they were bulletproof. She had an awfully small nose that reminded him of rats. In the seat before him was another girl that looked so thin it reminded him of someone with a terminal disease.

“Zephyr made a huge discovery on his grimoire.” At Lizzie’s cue, Zephyr placed the book that was beside him at the table. He opened it and turn the pages until he had reached the end of the book. It was blank. There were no writings on the last page, it was not even a page, it was the void space at the back of the cover. “What about it?” Amilia asked. “Look, the story ended saying about the heritage of the girl that was cursed. There was no next page when we read it but see this.”

“I’ll be damned if I’m taken naked again.” She couldn’t explain why she found his comment amusing, but she did. He gave her an odd look at the sound of her faint giggle, but said nothing as he quickly pulled on his clothes. They’d just finished pulling on their boots when a zombie -who had once been a male human- burst out of the brush. For a zombie, its speed was fairly quick, which led them to believe that it was advanced. It completely ignored them as it headed for the deer.

I stated instantly getting Zavier to put the code in that none of us would have gotten. As soon as we walked in my heart sunk alittle that's until Zavier walked forward and pushed me to the middle. "Grab it right away. Don't hesitate." He whispered before flicking a few switchs causing a book to ridd up. Fuck this could be good. The book looked ancient and power was radiating out of it. Waisting no time I grabbed it instantly causing me to absorb all the knowledge from the book. The book instantly disappeared. "You lied. Whoever grabbed it got the power." Azeki said sounding upset causing me to pull out my sword.

"This is—wow." Zac chuckled softly. "My grandfather was a big reader. He quoted literature as if he were a human book himself." I turned to look at Zac, my eyes lit up. "Zac, this is amazing." Zac shrugged nonchalantly, smiling. "I thought you'd like it." He walked over to one wall, skimming the shelves until he pulled out a book. "I wanted you to have this." I looked at the book he held out for me to take. It was called "Bloom" by Kelle Hampton. I smiled at the title, meeting his eyes. "Wha—but why?"
