(KAIRA'S POV)

I didn't see Slade for the rest of the night. I stayed in my room, staring at the ceiling, replaying every word he'd said in the car.

"Because you're my stepsister."

"Stay away from him."

"Forget I said anything."

I pressed my palms against my eyes. It didn't matter. It couldn't matter. He was my stepbrother. He had made it clear I was beneath him. He had kissed me and called it a mistake.

But then why did he look at me like I was the only thing in the room?

I was still thinking about it when my phone buzzed. I grabbed it, hoping it was Cameron, needing someone normal to talk to.

But it was an unknown number.

The message was short. Only five words.

"Stay away from Cameron Grey."

I stared at the screen, my heart racing. Then the messages started coming faster.

"He's not who he says he is."

"You're making a mistake."

"Trust me."

I typed back: "Who is this?"

The response came instantly.

"Slade."

I sat up in bed, my pulse hammering. Then the final message arrived.

"Ask him about Margo."

I stared at the words. Margo. Slade's mother.

What did Cameron have to do with Slade's mother?

I typed back: "What are you talking about?"

But the response never came. I waited for hours, but Slade's messages had stopped.

I didn't sleep that night.

---

The next morning, I dragged myself downstairs, my eyes heavy and my mind still spinning. I had barely slept. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Slade's face. Heard his voice. Felt the ghost of his lips on mine.

I found Mum and Tom already seated at the dining table, their plates half-empty and their smiles wide.

"Good morning, sweetheart," Mum said, her voice warm. "You're up early."

I forced a smile. "Couldn't sleep."

Tom chuckled. "Nerves? Or excitement?"

I blinked. "Excitement?"

"Tom and I have an announcement to make," Mum said, exchanging a glance with him. "We wanted to wait until you were both here, but—"

"Both?" I looked around the table. "Where's Slade?"

"He's coming," Tom said, but his voice was tight. "I sent for him."

As if on cue, Slade appeared in the doorway. He looked exactly like he had last night—dark jeans, black t-shirt, his hair still damp from a shower. His eyes swept the room, pausing on me for the briefest second before looking away.

He sat down across from me. His face was blank. Unreadable.

"Good, you're both here." Tom set down his fork. "Shanice and I have some news."

Mum was practically bouncing in her seat. I had never seen her this excited.

"We've decided to take a honeymoon," she announced, her voice bright. "Tom has been working so hard, and I've been running around with the wedding preparations. We need a break."

I nodded slowly, not sure where this was going. "That sounds nice. Where are you going?"

"We're thinking Greece," Tom said, his eyes locking onto Mum's. "Island hopping. Relaxing. No phones. No business. Just the two of us."

My stomach started to tighten.

"Congratulations," I said, forcing my voice to stay steady. "You deserve it, Mum."

Tom cleared his throat. "There's something else."

He glanced at Mum. She gave him a small nod.

"We're leaving tomorrow," Tom announced.

I stared at him. "Tomorrow?"

"Mum thought it would be better to go sooner rather than later," Tom explained. "We've already made the arrangements. The flights are booked."

Slade's fork clattered against his plate. His jaw was tight.

"And what about us?" I asked, my voice barely a whisper. "While you're gone?"

Mum smiled, but there was something nervous in her eyes. "You'll stay here, of course. In the mansion."

"Alone?" The word came out sharper than I intended.

"Not exactly alone," Tom said quickly. "The staff will be here. They'll take care of everything. You won't have to lift a finger."

I was still staring at Mum. "You're leaving us alone. For how long?"

"Three weeks," Mum said. "Maybe four. We haven't decided yet."

"Three weeks." I repeated the words like they were foreign. "You're leaving for three weeks. Just us."

Slade hadn't said a word. He was staring at his plate, his expression unreadable.

"I don't want to leave you, baby." Mum's voice was pleading. "But we need this. Just a little time away. You understand, right?"

I nodded. But I didn't understand. I didn't understand anything. My bully was about to become the only person I'd have for three weeks.

"I'll come by every day to see you both," Tom added. "And you can call us anytime. It won't be so bad."

"It's okay," I said, pushing back from the table. "I'm really happy for you. Please, enjoy yourself. Just... let me know when you're leaving."

I turned and fled the dining room. I couldn't breathe. I couldn't think. The walls were closing in around me.

Three weeks. Alone with Slade.

Just the thought made my chest ache.

---

I found myself in the garden. The same garden where everything had gone wrong. I sat on the stone steps near the lake house, hugging my knees to my chest.

I couldn't believe it. She was leaving me. She was leaving me with him.

I heard footsteps behind me. I didn't need to look up. I already knew who it was.

"Kaira."

I didn't answer.

Slade sat down beside me. Not too close. But close enough to feel his presence.

"Are you okay?"

I laughed, but there was no humor in it. "Am I okay? My mum is leaving me for a month. I'll be alone with you. In this house. For three weeks." I finally looked at him. "No. I'm not okay."

He was quiet for a long moment. Then he said, "It's just three weeks."

"Just three weeks." I shook my head. "You hate me. You've made that very clear. And now I'm supposed to live with you. Alone. For three weeks."

I expected him to agree. To tell me to get over it. But he didn't.

"I don't hate you."

I blinked. "What?"

"I don't hate you." He said it softly. Like it was a secret he had never told anyone.

I stared at him. For a long moment, neither of us spoke.

Then Slade stood up. "I'll try to stay out of your way. But if you need anything..." He trailed off. "Just ask."

He walked away, leaving me alone in the garden.

I watched him go, my mind reeling.

"I don't hate you."

Three words. They meant nothing. They meant everything.

I didn't know what to believe anymore.

  • A Bully For A StepBrother.    The First Time In Years

(MAKAIRA'S POV)I didn't sleep that night. Not a single wink.Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Slade's face. The way he'd looked at me when he said those words. You're mine. The way his voice had cracked just slightly, like he was admitting something that scared him.I tossed and turned, clutching the teddy bear to my chest like it was some kind of anchor.Dream of me?What had possessed me to say that? I'd typed it before I could stop myself, my fingers moving on their own accord. And then I'd spent the next hour staring at my phone, waiting for a reply that never came.He said he'd dream of me.At least, I thought he did. He hadn't actually typed it. But he hadn't denied it either.I groaned, pressing my face into my pillow. This was insane. I barely knew him. He'd been cold and distant and sometimes downright mean. But then there were moments—fleeting, fragile moments—where I caught a glimpse of something else. Something tender. Something raw.And it made me want to know more.--

  • A Bully For A StepBrother.    Carnival Confessions.

(MAKAIRA'S POV)I didn't know what had come over Slade. One moment he was complaining about boredom and checking his emails, the next he was squaring up to this Harry guy like he was about to start a fistfight over a stuffed bear."Step back." Slade's voice had been cold as ice, his jaw set in that rigid way I was starting to recognize meant he was holding something back.I opened my mouth to say something—to tell him it was fine, that I didn't actually care that much about the toy—but the words died in my throat when I saw the look in his eyes.He was furious. Not at me, I realized. At Harry. At the way Harry had looked at me, the way he'd kissed my hand, the way he'd called me beautiful."Slade—" I started, but he wasn't listening. He was already at the counter, slapping down money for the game. The attendant, a bored-looking teenager with acne and a nose ring, perked up when she saw the cash."Three rounds each," Slade said without looking at her. "We'll see who gets the highest sc

  • A Bully For A StepBrother.    The Challenge.

(SLADE’S POV)Life can be a bitch you know! After the first day I set my eyes on Makaira five years ago, I didn’t see her until the first day school resumed after the Christmas holiday. My dad had invited some kids from my school to celebrate Christmas with us and so I automatically assumed that she was one of the kids.I should have found out more about her but she provoked so much emotions from me that I didn’t want to know anything about her. Not even her name. Maybe if I had done my research, I would have noticed the same surname she shared with Mrs Shanice. And maybe I woukd havw not been too blind ans stupid to ignore the striking resemblance they shared. Maybe I would have not been such a jerk and a terrible person to her.If I had known that I would have a shot at being so close to her, then maybe I wouldn’t have been such an asshole—“That was so great!!” Makaira exclaimed as we feel in to step with each other. We had just finished a ride at the Ferris wheel, an experienc

  • A Bully For A StepBrother.    A Fair!

(SLADE'S POV)"A fair!!" She exclaimed, eyes widened as she peeked through the window at the huge iron gates."More like a VIP preview night." I corrected. My attention was on my phone, where I was going through my itinerary."Even better! Because now we have a lot of rides to ourselves." She was craning her neck even harder now. "And I think I see older people.""Probably. Our parents were the ones invited." I couldn't keep my eyes on my phone for long, I had to steal a glance again and I was disappointed because I couldn't see those sparkling blue eyes but at least she wasn't so sad anymore. Her excitement was palpable, it has been since we got here and she realized that we are here for the exclusive launch of a fair."What are we really waiting for?" She asked, her body almost out of the car.A couple of knocks on the window interrupted my answer."That." I said with a sigh as I slipped my phone in my pocket. "Are you ready?""I've been ready since we got here! I love fairs so much

  • A Bully For A StepBrother.    An Amazing Day.

(KAIRA'S POV)"I'm not a Horton." I said to myself, my teeth gnashed against each other. But the person who stared back at me in the mirror looked very much like a Horton.A beauty team had just finished with me. Light makeup, perfect hair pinned up, a beautiful beige crop top over the classiest pair of high-waisted denim jeans I had ever seen.Slade was right, we didn't go home. We went to a hotel and I got ready in a beautiful suite that looked like it belonged to a princess.I couldn't deny that I looked pretty but everything wasn't sitting right with me."I'm not a Horton." I repeated to my reflection in the mirror.I kept my eyes shut trying to suppress the emotions that were building inside. Then I grabbed the little pink purse and stepped out of the door. But Slade was standing right there so I doubled back and missed my steps because of the heeled glass slippers I was wearing.I was reaching for the doorknob, to grasp it for a little stability but I missed it and would have cr

  • A Bully For A StepBrother.    Not Over, Pauper!

(KAIRA’S POV)I have lived in PineCrest for thirteen years, which means I have also had the privilege (thanks to Tom Horton) of going from PineCrest elementary to PineCrest high school. I kid you not, despite all these years I have made no friends. Literally, none at all. The most attention I get is when I am getting bullied or being laughed at. The only people I am cordial is some of my teachers, and of course Mrs Skye, our ink club matron. That being established, you know how antisocial I am in school so I kid you not when I say that I have no idea who the angry but pretty brunette, holding my phone is.Her almond eyes looked me over like my presence deeply disgusted her.“Who the hell do you think you are?” She greeted.I frowned, unsure of what to say. She leaned forward. “It doesn’t matter that your cheap mother found her way in to the Horton family, you will always be a charity case.” She laughed. “Slade already made it clear to us all.”My heart sank. The fact that she invol

(KAIRA'S POV)Slade was torturing me with silence. (KAIRA'S POV) The large iron gates opened, and I felt the familiar weight of panic settle behind my ribs. (KAIRA'S POV) "Mr. Horton, your project partner is… Miss Jin." Our English teacher, Mrs. Reed, announced. My stomach sank, and a heavy weight transferred to my chest. Of all the people in PineCrest High, it had to be Slade Horton. Football captain. Sole hair of Horton Empire. Most popular an
