The ride back to De Vitalio Mansion was quiet and smooth. With Enzo driving up front, Amira and Montez were seated behind. Each far apart from the other.

A thousand thoughts raced through her head as she sat still, anxiously tapping her index finger on the back of her palm.

All she could think of was the deal she now had with Alessandro Grimaldi. Moreso was how she was going to dig up the dirt on Montez when they always stayed ten feet away from each other.

Neither Alessandro nor Nathan knew their relationship was a sham. So it was easy for them to think she could handle it with a breeze but that was not the case.

She stole a glance at him for just a split second. His eyes, stone cold as always, were pinned down on his cell phone with his large thumb scrolling over business emails.

Ever since she knew this man up close, it felt like his entire existence revolved around

  • A GAME OF LIES   CHAPTER 22- THE QUEEN IN HIS SHIRT

The next morning, Montez woke up with the sun streaming through his window. Every day was torturously the same these days. It felt like he was tossed into a loop and cursed to relive the same moments over and over again. His billion-dollar empire was the only thing still keeping him sane. Seriously, how do poor people not die of depression? Wait, some actually do. It wasn’t until he got into the bathtub that the memories of last night’s ordeal with his little Fiore came crossing through his mind. A small smile tugged at his lips as the water worked its magic and the steam deeper into his pores. Funny of her to think she could actually kill him. Just like that? With poison? How would he ever face his ancestors if that had turned out to be his method of death? She was such an Amateur, he wondered how she was able to kill someone like his father. Well, not him. Just how dumb did she think he w

“I don’t think I’m in the mood for wine right now.” She faked a polite smile, refusing his offer. “Oh, that’s a shame….” Montez glared into the red liquid as if he were staring into an abyss. “….because I wasn’t asking you to, Amira.” He lifted his eyes to her. “I am telling you.” She swallowed, heart thumping endlessly in her chest. What the hell was going on? Did he suspect something? It couldn’t be! He couldn’t have known. “Here….” He placed the wine glass in front of her and took hers instead, raising it. “….won’t you toast with me, cara?” Damn it! Fingers trembling, she lifted the glass and clinked gently with his. Amira was left totally defenseless when he drank from her glass whilst keeping his gaze fixed on her. Shit, she was trapped. She couldn’t drink this or she would die. goddamn the bastard! He knew exactly what he was doing. Her hands curled t

  • A GAME OF LIES   CHAPTER 19- THE SIP OF DEATH

That night, the mansion was quiet in that eerie way that made every creak of the floor sound like a confession. Amira tiptoed with her bare foot through the corridor. It was a relief Montez hadn’t returned yet. She slipped into her bedroom and hid the bottle of poison in her drawer. Now, she needed to get into his study and see if she could find anything on him. She rushed to his side of the house only to see that the mahogany door was standing ajar, as though inviting her inside. The crook had forgotten to keep it closed as usual. She meant in m Montez’s desk was an altar of orderliness. Everything was aligned with military precision. Papers stacked neatly, pens perfectly parallel. The drawers were locked, of course. The man wouldn’t leave anything truly damning lying in plain sight. She tried the top one anyway but it was no use. Bending lower, she scanned the underside of the desk. Her fingers brushed a

  • A GAME OF LIES   CHAPTER 18- THE KING AT THE TABLE

The air in the Syndicate’s Naples stronghold was thick with cigar smoke and tension. A long mahogany table stretched down the dimly lit chamber, lined with men who controlled empires from the shadows. Their faces were a mix of age-worn cunning and ruthless youth, each bearing the kind of eyes that had seen lives taken and fortunes built from blood. In the midst of all this was one who held far more authority and dread than all of them combined—Montez Vitalio sitting at the head, as he always did when he attended these meetings. A black suit molded to his frame, along with a dark silk tie, a watch worth more than some of the cars parked outside gleaming on his wrist. He exuded a calm that only came from knowing every person in the room feared you. But fear was a different agent from respect. He was well aware that not all respected him. Who cares? Montez would rather be feared than respec

“Nathan!” She scolded, both hands fisted in anger. How dare he interrupt her? What right did he have to even lay so much as a finger on her after all he had done. “We have to talk.” He cut her off, eyes gleaming with intention. “I’m sorry but you’re going to have to tell Alessandro I haven’t made any progress yet.” “This isn’t about Alessandro. It’s about how the hell you got entangled with my cousin and what the hell you’re doing in his life.” Amira blinked, surprised and confused as he let his words sink into her head, and in the next second, much to his surprise, she burst out laughing. His eyes narrowed. “Is this a joke to you?” “I’m sorry but you are the joke, Nathan.” She shook her head side to side, hair swaying in the same motion that she had to brush them back with her fingers. “How does any of this concern you?”

  • A GAME OF LIES   CHAPTER 16- DEADLY ENEMIES

The shot cracked across the entire Mansion like thunder. But Montez didn’t move. Not even flinching an inch. One of his men shifted at the last second, a metallic ping ringing out as the bullet ricocheted off concealed body armor. “Wrong move,” Montez drawled, his voice carrying a bone-chilling calm over the chaos. He adjusted his cufflinks like they were discussing dinner reservations instead of death. “You just signed your own death warrant, old man.” Lamberto’s face contorted with rage, but Montez took a single, deliberate step forward. His men fanned out, semi-automatics at the ready, while the other tuxedoed goons tightened their stance. Amira couldn’t breathe nor could she couldn’t tear her eyes away from him. That arrogant, unkillable bastard — the man who could smirk at an open gun barrel and make it look like foreplay. Damn it, if only that bullet had hit its mark. “Lower your weapon,” Montez ordere
