For once, I didn’t have an early shoot. Which meant, in theory, I could enjoy breakfast without being chased out of bed by Max, a schedule, or some unfortunate combination of the two.

Apparently, fate had other ideas.

Max and I had barely settled at a table in my aunt’s restaurant when people started gathering to ask for selfies and autographs. This was why I didn’t have the luxury to come here to eat like this even though it was my aunt’s restaurant.

**WARNING****THIS CHAPTER CONTAINS SCENES DEPICTING ATTEMPTED SEXUAL ASSAULT, PHYSICAL VIOLENCE, WEAPONS, AND INTENSE DISTRESS. READER DISCRETION IS ADVISED**Anastasia Greene JohnsonMy palms were still clammy from the nightmarish cinematic travesty Alex had dragged me to. Had I possessed the foresight to inquire about the genre, I would’ve unequivocally declined.Horror? Hard pass.I couldn’t believe I’d exhibited such childish behavior in front of him. He was five years younger than me, yet sat through that grotesque spectacle for two hours while I shrieked and flinched like some caricature of feminine fragility. I sighed, massaging my temple as the mortifying scenes replayed in my mind’s eye.Alex had promised he’d return promptly but it felt like eons. Ten minutes since he’d gone to the parking lot. What is taking so long? With another sigh, I dialled Brynn.“Hey, there, the movie’s over, huh?” Her voice was bright, as usual.“Yeah. What’s Ruslan up to?”“Oh, he knocked out afte

  • A Love Once Lost   Chapter One Hundred Two: I’m Her Husband

Alexander Finnegan RobertsonI searched for Anne near the concession stand, only to discover she’d apparently finished buying snacks before I arrived. Then a flash of sage and ivory caught my eye from across the foyer. There she was, clutching a bucket of popcorn and a bottle of water.Unfortunately, she had company. An Asian bloke stood in front of her, looking scarcely old enough to have finished secondary school. A backpack hung from his shoulders, and dark-rimmed glasses perched on his nose.It wasn’t their conversation that put my back up, though. It was the way he thrust his phone towards Anne, evidently expecting her to hand over her number. From her increasingly strained expression, I gathered that he wasn’t particularly interested in taking no for an answer. As if the evening weren’t already ridiculous enough, the pair were dressed almost identically, as though Fate had decided to amuse itself at my expense. The longer he persisted, the more uncomfortable Anne became. When he

  • A Love Once Lost   Chapter One Hundred One: National Matching Outfit Day

Anastasia Greene Johnson“Well… you’re quite overdressed for a movie night,” I drawled, giving Alex a leisurely once-over as he pulled up outside the movie theatre.I’d been mulling it over for a while but had kept my mouth shut. Still, the fact that we were practically twinning in our outfits was difficult to overlook, and I couldn’t decide whether it was sheer coincidence or some elaborate conspiracy on his part.Alex glanced down at himself, a flicker of concern crossing his features, before a self-satisfied smirk reclaimed his face. He raked a hand through his perfectly styled hair.“It’s actually quite casual. It only looks overdressed because I’m ridiculously handsome and can pull off anything.”Oh, here we go again.I rolled my eyes so hard I was surprised they didn’t lodge themselves in the back of my skull.“Whatever helps you sleep at night.”I climbed out before he could launch into another unsolicited dissertation on his own attractiveness. However, instead of driving off

  • A Love Once Lost   Chapter One Hundred: A Colour-Coordinated Disaster

Alexander Finnegan RobertsonThey both turned towards me. Max, apparently gifted with the ability to read my thoughts straight off my face, instinctively stepped away from Anne. She, meanwhile, looked utterly bewildered by my sudden interruption, seemingly oblivious to the snarl that had shattered their cosy little domestic scene.Max, however, needed no explanation. A mischievous smirk spread across his face.Fuck. Was I really that obvious?I plastered on a smile, hoping to disguise my outburst, and sauntered towards them, deliberately wedging myself between the pair.“Looks like you’re struggling,” I remarked, gesturing towards the upper cupboard with studied nonchalance. “What do you need?”“The sesame oil,” Anne replied, pointing upwards.I retrieved it at once and handed it to her. “Here you go.”“Thanks!” She rewarded me with a radiant smile.I had to grip the kitchen counter to stop myself from being knocked sideways by its sheer brilliance. My stomach lurched, my heart went ha

  • A Love Once Lost   Chapter Ninety-Nine: A Dangerous Comparison

Alexander Finnegan RobertsonThe realisation left me rooted to the spot.Anne was still laughing, blissfully unaware of the chaos unfolding inside my head. If she knew what I was thinking, she’d probably be horrified.Even I knew there was something profoundly wrong with it.Not because she was currently seeing someone else. But because my feelings had taken root for all the wrong reasons.I wasn’t falling for Anne herself, I was falling for the countless ways she reminded me of Daisy. Now how utterly fucked up is that?Even if Anne were single and dating me instead, guilt would follow me into every moment we shared, poisoning every I love you before it ever reached my lips. It would be a lie by omission, a deception neither of us deserved.Because, honestly, did I even have feelings for her? Or was I desperately searching for pieces of Daisy in someone who had never asked to be a substitute, all to soothe the wounds I’d never learnt to live with?I could no longer tell the difference

  • A Love Once Lost   Chapter Ninety-Eight: Falling Again

Anastasia Greene JohnsonI had just placed a customer’s lunch on their table when my phone buzzed inside my apron pocket. I pulled it out on my way back to the kitchen, expecting a message from Caleb. He’d promised to let me know when he landed in LA.Instead, it was Alex.Surprising? Not particularly, given the way he’d practically shouted at me yesterday. Still, I couldn’t fathom what he wanted now. The name I’d saved him under after our last encounter didn’t exactly inspire warm feelings, either.Grumpy Celebrity: Are you free for something after practice today?I narrowed my eyes at the screen. What’s he up to?Please don’t tell me he’s planning another adventure like that roller coaster.Or perhaps he’s arranged a surprise bungee-jumping session to punish me for having the audacity to turn up with an injured toe?Honestly, I’d sooner have him cancel our arrangement and strike me off his payroll. After a sigh and several increasingly ridiculous scenarios, I typed a cautious reply.
