Max’s POV

All of a sudden, the door opened.

It was opened in a very slow way at first, It sounded like a hinge crying out. My head lifted from where it had been pressed against the wall. The chain on my wrists still burned against my skin, but I ignored it. Not the usual guard rotation. Too soon. Too light-footed.

Then the scent hit, acrid, bitter with hate.

I was on complete guard before the door even opened. My wolf kept screaming against the inside of my skin, growling low, ready to tear against anything or anyone if danger stepped over that threshold.

The door swung inward with a creak.

The man came inside with a high air of confidence.

I didn’t know him. Not his face, not his voice, not his smell.

But the hatred in his eyes felt very personal.

He stopped a few paces from me, close enough that I could smell the salt of his sweat, the metal tang of old blood clinging to him. He didn’t look at Lana, his gaze stayed fixed on me like she didn’t even exist.

“Do you remember me?” His vo

Lana’s POVMax’s forehead was still resting against mine. And the world felt very quiet. The air between us was thick. Almost heavy. Like the room itself was holding its breath, waiting for what came next… then he moved. His hand slid from my neck to cup my face. Both of his hands framing me now. His thumbs brushing softly over my cheeks. His fingers were big. Warm and a little rough. It was like he didn’t trust himself to grip too tight. His eyes searched mine like he was looking for permission for something. Anything that would tell him this was okay.I gave it to him the only way I could. I leaned forward the tiniest bit. Just enough that my nose brushed his. That was all it took.He kissed me.It didn’t begin gentle, it began like a breaking. The kind of kiss that sounds like something unclenching. Raw and immediate, and his mouth found mine like it had been searching through a long winter. He kissed with a hunger that startled me, baseline instincts and everything he'd held in fo

Lana’s POV“Because of you... I'm alive”The words came flying out of me before I could catch them. The room folded quiet around them. It felt like someone had pressed pause on the world.Max didn’t answer. He just watched me like he was trying to read the thing I couldn’t quite say. His fingers still curled around mine. They were warm and steady. But his shoulders…God…his shoulders were a tight coil. He sat like someone who’d been carrying too much for too long. And was only now finishing a shift that never seemed to end.The pack doctor had been here an hour earlier. The sharp and medicinal smell of alcohol wedged with crushed herbs still clung to the air. An odd clean scent. The linen scent and the faint burn of cigarette smoke. The small lamp threw a lazy circle of amber across the room. Everything else drowned into shadow and soft edges. The curtains were drawn close. But I still could hear the city breathing beyond them.Max sat in the chair by the bed. He was close enough that

Max’s POVMy hands kept on vibrating endlessly, no matter how I tried to calm down.Even when Max pulled me close, even when his arms were warm and strong around me, they continued endlessly trembling. My heart was too fast. My head was too full. Everything in that lodge had been blood and fear and noise. Now it was quiet, but my ears still continued to endlessly ring. Max didn’t say a word as he led me outside. The night air was so cold, and I sucked in a shaky breath that I had been holding it for hours. The forest was black around us, the moon just a thin silver slice. Max kept me close to his side as the rest of the pack moved around, finishing what he told them to do. I didn’t look back at the place I ways held hostage for a while. I didn’t want to see it ever again anymore.“Stay here,” he said softly. His voice was low, rough, still full of the fight.I nodded, though my hands gripped the seat so hard my knuckles hurt.He turned and spoke to his pack. then after a while he slid

Max’s POVI felt so scared at that moment, I tried to not show it but my confidence had completely broken when Lana’s life became compromised. Then I heard it.A sound outside.Soft feet. Low growls. The sound of my pack.At first, it was faint, just a scrape of claws on dirt. Then it grew louder, closer. My wolf perked up, ears straining, tail lashing in my head.Leonard heard it too. I saw the change in his eyes. His smile faded.A slow grin spread over my own face. The plan had actually worked.“It's not too late. Let this not go too far.” I said, my voice low.Leonard frowned, confused.“Threatening me with her life, was the worst mistake you made” I took a step forward, very slowly, my claws still out. “You don’t own anything.”The front door exploded open.BAM!Wood shattered and flew everywhere. The air filled with growls. My pack rushed in like a wave of teeth and fur. Huge wolves, fur standing up, eyes glowing in the dark. They spread out fast, circling the room.Leonard’s fa

  • A wife for the cursed alpha    117. Hostage

Max’s POVThe halls were even more darker and colder than I had actually expected them to be. I moved first, in a very slow and quiet way, my body was low like a hunting werewolf. My feet made absolutely zero sound on the old wooden floor. The air smelled completely of sweat, oil, and fear. I could tell which way the wolves were very alert just by the smell.Lana stayed close behind me, her fingers gripping the back of my shirt so she wouldn’t get lost. Her steps were light, but I still glanced back every few seconds to make sure she was there. My wolf growled softly in my head. Protect her. Keep her safe. Kill anyone who comes close.I moved us to a corner and stopped. I sniffed the air, my ears straining. A guard was coming closer, his steps slow, lazy, like he was bored. I waited, every muscle tight, ready to spring. When the man turned the corner, I was on him before he could shout. It was quick. I slammed him against the wall so hard the wood cracked. One hand crushed his throat

Max’s POVThe room was too quiet. Not the good kind of quiet. It was actually the exact type of quiet that makes you feel like something is watching you.My heart kept beating so fast, I could hear it very loudly. Boom. Boom. Boom.My wolf was awake. Not calm. Not patient. Pacing back and forth inside me like a caged beast. I could almost feel its claws raking the inside of my ribs. It wanted out.The smell of silver was everywhere. It stung my nose and burned my throat. It was a sharp, bitter smell like hot metal and blood mixed together. My wrists hurt. No… more than hurt. They burned like someone was holding them against fire. The cuffs cut into my skin. Every time I moved, the chains made a cold, scraping sound on the floor.I looked at Lana. She was sitting close, but not too close. Her face was pale. Her lips were pressed tight like she was trying to keep from shaking. She was pretending to be strong for me and I could tell. But I could smell her pain.It was in the air. Faint
