JAKE'S POV
Ryan screeched the car to a halt in front of the pack house. I flung open the door and stepped outside, her unconscious body in my arms. Her blood soaked into my shirt, warm and sticky, but I barely noticed. All that mattered to me was the faint, fragile breath I could feel against my chest.
Damien dashed out of the car a second later, his face a puzzled, worried expression.
“Jake, what are we going to do?”. His face and tone were a mix of concern and confusion.
“Find the head guard. Tell him to get Selene here right away,” I ordered. “Let her know the urgency of the situation.” My tone brooked no argument.
Damien’s footsteps were a blur behind me as I bolted up the stairs to the pack house
Damien nodded sharply and set out to the security post.
Looking down at her pale face with dark, tangled hair framing it made my heart tighten. I balanced her weight on my arm as I climbed the stairs up into the house.
The door swung open ahead of me, two junior guards stepping aside as they caught sight of me. Their eyes flicked to the girl, curiosity glinting in their gaze, but neither dared speak.
“Get back to your posts, and ensure the perimeter is secured!” I snapped, and they hurried off without a word.
Gently, I laid her on the examining table, cautious, not to move her body unnecessarily, ignoring the strong antiseptic smell that always has a way of making me nauseous.
The sight of her in this state caused a knot of anxiety to tangle inside of me. I couldn't leave her side, and this incessant mate Bond was screaming in my veins.
Each passing minute felt like an excruciating eternity. In the back of my mind, Lucio, my wolf, paced, his howls of frustration echoing mine.
“Selene should have been here by now,” Lucio growled in my mind, his frustration matching my own.
“She’s coming,” I muttered aloud.
"She is in pain. You shouldn’t wait. She’s our mate. Do something!” he snarled.
“And risk making it worse? I'm not a healer, Lucio," I snapped back immediately, gripping the edge of the table. "Selene will arrive shortly.”
I turned abruptly as I heard approaching footsteps. The door swung open and Selene, accompanied by Damien, stepped into the room. Her healer's bag draped over one shoulder.
She was still wearing casual attire, probably because Damien's eagerness had dragged her out of her evening routine. Tales have it that Selene is as old as time; ageless.
“What happened?” she demanded, moving quickly to the girl’s side.
“I found her in the woods. She was attacked by rogues.” I said, stepping aside, and giving her space to carry out her examination.
Without hesitation, Selene tore off the girl's bloody dress to examine her wounds. She had deep claw scars on her arms and side.
"She's lost a lot of blood," Selene whispered, her voice full of concern. “She's strong though, I can feel her energy. She will make it through.”
Those words brought a glimmer of relief to me as I sat and watched Selene move with experienced precision, cleaning and suturing the wounds. Her movement suddenly slowed down when he caught a glimpse of the crescent-shaped pendant around the girl's neck.
“Where did you say you found her?” Selene asked, her voice hesitant.
“hmm.. boundary between Howling Hills and the Red Keep,” I replied, narrowing my eyes. “Why do you ask?”
Selene didn’t answer immediately. Her fingers brushed the pendant as her brows furrowed. There was something guarded in her expression, something she wasn’t saying.
“It’s nothing,” she said quickly.
“Selene,” I called out, my voice low and threatening, “if you know something, tell me.”
She didn’t meet my gaze, instead returning her focus to the girl’s injuries.
Frustration built up in my chest, but I forced myself to step back. She continued cleaning and stitching up the wounds.
A couple of minutes later, she reached for a towel to wipe off the bloody mess, followed by washing and sterilization of her suture materials.
“That would be all, Alpha. She’ll need rest,” Selene said, packing her supplies. “Ensure you monitor her overnight.”
“Yeah,” I steeled myself and nodded subtly.
Selene hesitated, her eyes searching mine for a moment before she nodded. “Very well. Call me if there’s any change.”
She took her leave, gently shutting the door behind her.
My gaze fell back to her face as I pulled in a chair and sat beside the bed, leaning forward with my elbows on my knees. I couldn't help my thoughts spiraling into chaos.
“She’s beautiful,” Lucio said, his voice more calm now.
“Can you just stop!” I grunted, leaning back into the chair. “She’s a problem,” I muttered.
“She’s our mate, you know it! Not like you can change anything right now” Lucio pressed on.
“And that’s exactly the problem. I can't bear another guilt, I don't think I can love another after Alisha”
Lucio growled softly, but I shut him out.

The sound of the door creaking open, jolted me back awake. I had dozed off for God knows how long. I immediately checked on little Miss. She was still unconscious but stable.
“I was told you've been here for hours… What's going on? Are you okay?” My mum, Tessa queried as she hurriedly stepped in. “Oh goodness! Who is she?” She asked as she examined the unconscious lady.
“I’m fine, Mom,” I said, stepping back slightly, giving her room to examine me like a toddler growing a tooth.
She didn’t press further, her gaze returning to the girl. After a moment of silence, she turned to me again, this time, more relaxed but still curious.
“Who is she, Jake?”
“I'm yet to find out mum, but…” I stuttered.
“....But what, Jake?”
“She’s my mate,” I finally admitted, the words heavy on my lips.
Tessa’s brows lifted in surprise, but her expression quickly shifted to understanding. “And you’re afraid.”
She pulled up a chair beside me, her expression gentle but firm. “Jake, you can’t keep running from this. You’ve carried this guilt for too long.”
“I killed Alisha,” I said, my voice cracking. “I couldn’t protect her, and now the Moon Goddess wants me to risk someone else’s life? How is that fair?”
“She’ll die because of me, mom!” I said, my voice rough with emotion. “Just..just like Alisha. Mom, I'm a monster! She doesn't deserve this, I don't deserve to have another blood in my hands” Tears threatened to drop but I had to sulk.
Tessa reached out, placing a comforting hand on my arm. “Jake, you didn’t kill Alisha. You are no monster! The curse did.”
“And the curse is still here,” I said bitterly. “What’s to stop it from taking her too?”
“You…You Jake! You have to open up your heart to heal! Let go of your past!” Tessa said firmly. “You’re stronger now. Wiser. And this girl—she’s not Alisha. She’s your second chance. Don’t let fear rob you of that.”
Her words cut through the storm of doubt in my mind, but they didn’t erase the weight of the curse or the memories of what I’d lost.
I shook my head, frustration boiling over. “You don’t understand. What if I lose control again? The full moon is in two weeks!”
“You won’t,” Mum said, holding my hands firmly. “Because this time, you won’t be alone. Let her in, Jake. Let her help you. I'd be in my study if you need me”
“Yeah…Goodnight mum,” I said as she watched her leave.
Her words lingered long after she left. I sat in the dim light, staring at the girl. As the hours stretched into the night, I remained by her side.
“Who are you?” I whispered, my voice barely audible. “Why did the Moon Goddess send you to me?”
ELDER GREGORY’S POV“What the hell did you just say?” Jake barked at me, his tone dripping venom- I was sure he would have punched my face if I were a younger version of me. “Give me a reason why I should believe any word you just said to me?” he continued. “My mother never kept anything from me. So tell me why I should believe what you,” Jake spat, banging the table in front of me.I hesitated, allowing him to vent his frustration. “Look here Jake, all I did was respect your parents' wishes! All I did was be the loyal Beta to your father, Alpha Julian! It wasn't my place to spill the beans here. Get that straight!” I rose to my feet, returning the aura. I stared him squarely in the face, setting things straight.I watched as the rage in Jake’s eyes flickered at that point giving way for brokenness to surface. His shoulder collapsed as he slumped back into his seat. “Look here man, I understand what it feels right now for you figuring this out. But I can’t sit back and watch a war e
JAKE’S POVI groggily woke up to my phone ringing, pulling me up from the moment of peace I had, away from the harsh reality that I had just lost the one person that meant everything to me. I slowly peeled my eyes open, blinking into the bright light till my room came into focus. I ran my hands across the sheets till I reached my phone, which was under my pillow. The call ended immediately.I sat up, rubbing my eyes when I spotted Lyra lying on the couch opposite me with her legs crossed, fiddling with her phone. “How long have I been out?” I asked in a hoarse tone, going through my contact list.“Ohh! You’re awake now. You’ve been out for about an hour and a half or two,” Lyra responded, crossing over to the bed. “Two hours? And it felt like I had just closed my eyes for thirty minutes,” I quipped.Lyra sat next to me with a soft smile, looking into my face. “Why are you staring at me that way?” I chuckled softly with my brows knitted together in confusion.“Nothing,” She beamed. “I
JAKE’S POV"She's gone?" The news struck me like a sting from a fire ant. No! The maid must be out of her mind or something. I just left my mother an hour ago before coming down here. She was down, yeah! But not...not death. I scraped my seat backwards, scrambling up with my eyes popping out of their sockets in disbelief.“Damon, take Caspian back to his cell,” I said through clenched teeth, my eyes meeting Lyra as she stood breathless, racing off ahead of me. “How about...” Damon tried to speak, but I wasn't willing to listen to anything right now.“Now,” I barked at himHe nodded sharply, grabbing Caspian by the arm. Lyra was already ahead of me. I ran as fast as my legs could sprint, brushing off and pushing aside anybody who stood in my way."No..no...no, this better not be true," I whispered under my heavy breath, my heart drumming like a war drum into my ears. The door to her room was already open, and I barged into it, not pausing to knock like before. I was brought to a halt
LYRA’S POV"Help! Help!" I heard the sound of what seemed like distant echoes, distant cries coming from somewhere, far away. It sounded muffled or perhaps hollow, like they were coming through a tunnel. Maybe it was the distant cries of galagos, also known as bush babies. They were common in this area. But it came again, this time clearer, like it was right beside me. I sprang up from the shade I lay under, my senses spiking.Tara surged within me, restless as she sniffed the air, the soil. “Something's wrong,” she whispered. “Use my senses!”I shut my eyes, linking with her. I began to hear the faintest gush of the wind, the distant rustle of dry leaves, melodies, chants of birds building their nest, and every little movement here in the wild. Then I caught the scent- they were real people. I followed it until I found them.Down in a deep, dark pit—at least a dozen of them. Pale faces. Bloodied clothes. Children clinging to their mothers. One of them looked up and screamed, “Please
LYRA'S POVMy fist hurts as I pounded violently against Jake's chest. "Open that damn cage, Jake! Let him out!" I yelled, my voice came out rough with rage. Each word hitched with sharp breaths, my nails clawing at his shirt like they could peel reason into his heart. "You had no right! You can't just lock him up like an animal!" I kept thrashing and telling.Jake stood still, wincing from each hit I threw at him. Not a step backward. One would think he was planted at the spot. He clenched his jaw so tight that the muscles of his head twitched. His chest was rising and falling, but not in rhythm with mine. No words from him. Just utter silence that infuriated me even more."Say something! Do something! Don't you dare keep quiet on me, staring at me like I was some barking dog!" I yelled right in his face. So much, I bet he would have samples of my saliva in his eye. Then, with a suddenness that snapped me back, his hand clamped around my arm. Not harshly, but firm to keep me still. "E
LYRA’S POV“Traitor! May the gods forbid! You deserve to die! Witch!” The clamor of the people echoed in my ear as the Chariot rolled slowly behind the scene unfolding before me.I sat on the open-roof royal chariot with Jake by my side, our fingers interlocked with each other on his thigh watching the crowd boo and throw garbage at Ella who was dragged along the road by mean guards.Partaking in the procession was Selene, who was dressed in her traditional long black robe. Her wavy silver hair cascaded down her shoulders. In her hands was the cup of shame from which Ella must drink from and forever be damned till death calls. Amidst the booing were chants of acknowledgements and praise from the people. “All Hail, Luna Lyra, The first of her name, The queen of shadowclaw!” The voices rose so loud that one would think it was my coronation day. My cheeks were as pink as those of a Barbie doll when a little girl broke through from the crowd, screaming my name and reaching towards me wi
LYRA’S POVThe mention of the name Caspian hit me like a punch in my stomach. Caspian? What would Jake likely be having with Jake? I saw the look on his face when he mentioned Caspian’s name early. It was clearly streaked with Jealousy. On second thought, what could the truth be? Are they brothers? Hell no! Because that would be totally ridiculous.I shot Jake a side-eye long look. “What could that be?” my brow rose as I queried.I felt unease beginning to creep up under my skin as Jake hesitated in giving me a response. His face fell to the ground without a word for what felt like a century. “Come on Jake! You don’t have to kill me with suspense before you let the cat out of the bag,” I nudged his shoulder slightly, with a soft smile slowly appearing on my face.Jake finally looked up, meeting my face with an unreadable expression. “I can see you’re in love with this guy. I can hear the excitement in your tone at the mention of his name, but you don’t have to rub it in,” he threw the
AEMOND'S POV “Sir..sir, I think we have a big problem!” A guard rushed in, panting like he had escaped an attack from a polar bear.I spun sharply. “Are you out of your damn mind?” I snapped, walking towards the guard. "How dare you barge into my chambers without knocking? I'm sure you want this day to be your last here in the pack house as a guard, right? I yelled into his face. The young man recoiled his eyes wide with fear. His face was pale, sweat gathering around his temples. “I…I’m sorry, Alpha Aemond! But it’s urgent. You need to come. Now,” he stuttered, leaning in a bow.I heaved a sigh, seeing how his body shook in fear. "And was that why you had to badge into the chambers like a mad man?” I queried him. My voice, softer and calmer than before. He didn't say another word, just words of apology. Took a long look at him and eased him off the tension in his body. "You may go. I'd be out there in a minute," I waved him off like a housefly, turning back to my seat. He wasted no
DON CARLITO'S POVI stood at my usual spot- The rooftop of my estate overlooking the city. It was past mid-afternoon, but today the weather wasn't harsh. It was windy, though not storm-like, but I couldn't sense it brewing, making me uncomfortable.Today seemed quiet, too damn quiet for a man like me. In my world, silence does not mean peace; it meant tension. It meant something was about to snap and I hated not being ahead of events.I viewed the city through my massive periscope, swaying it left and right, observing the street, which was the breeding site of chaos. "Any news from the head of the shadow boys?" I asked in a carefree tone, still looking through the periscope."Nothing, Sir. The last time I heard from Perez, he informed me the shipments are yet to arrive at the port," my assistant, Quavo, responded sharply. Quavo had been my eyes and ears around the city, sometimes I wonder why I hadn't given him the task of getting me the girl and the damn pendant."We are expecting
