Marliene's POV

The sleek black sedan glided along the winding road leading to Moorgrave Manor, its polished exterior reflecting the vibrant hues of the setting sun. I stared out the window, my heart racing with a mixture of anticipation and anxiety. "This is it," I reminded myself. "The beginning of my new life as Luna."

As we approached the manor, the grand structure loomed before me, a modern marvel of architecture adorned with expansive glass windows and elegant stonework. It was a stark contrast to the life I had known, and I imagined a warm welcome awaiting me inside. But as the car came to a halt, I felt a knot tighten in my stomach.

The driver opened the door, and I stepped out onto the meticulously manicured lawn, the scent of freshly cut grass mingling with the crisp evening air. A group of servants stood nearby, their expressions a blend of curiosity and disdain. I squared my shoulders, summoning every ounce of confidence I could muster.

"Welcome to Moorgrave, Lady Marliene," a voice dripped with honeyed malice. It was Ariel, Lex's mother, her perfectly styled hair and designer outfit radiating authority. She approached me with a smile that felt more like a threat.

"Thank you," I replied, forcing a smile that felt foreign on my lips.

"Such a lovely dress," Ariel continued, her tone laced with sarcasm. "I suppose they finally decided to let you wear something other than rags. How quaint."

I clenched my fists, resisting the urge to retort. "Just breathe," I reminded myself. "You're not a servant anymore. You're about to be Luna."

"Shall we show you to your chambers?" Ariel suggested, her eyes glinting with something dark and predatory. The servants shuffled forward, but their gazes were anything but welcoming. I caught whispers as we walked, their contempt palpable.

"She doesn't even have wolf blood," one servant scoffed, loud enough for me to hear. "What does she think she's doing here?"

"Probably just a pretty face to placate the council," another chimed in, laughter bubbling beneath the surface.

I kept my head high, ignoring the jabs. You all will see, I thought. I won't be the weakling you expect.

As we reached my chamber, Ariel gestured grandly. "Here we are. I hope it meets your... standards." Her smile was more of a smirk, and I could feel the weight of her scrutiny pressing down on me.

The room was lavish, adorned with rich fabrics and modern furnishings that blended luxury with comfort. Yet, the beauty felt tainted by the venomous atmosphere surrounding me.

"Thank you," I said, my voice steady. "I appreciate it."

Ariel leaned closer, her voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper. "Just remember, dear, the council expects a real Luna. Don't disappoint them."

Before I could respond, she turned on her heel and swept out of the room, leaving me alone with the echoes of her words. I took a deep breath, trying to shake off the unease that settled in my stomach.

Later that evening, Lex summoned me to his chamber. As I entered, the door creaked ominously behind me, sealing me in a space that felt both intimate and intimidating. He stood by the window, his silhouette framed by the fading light, exuding an air of authority that made my heart flutter.

"Come in, Marliene," he said, his voice deep and commanding. I stepped forward, the soft carpet muffling my footsteps.

"I wanted to discuss our wedding," he continued, turning to face me. His gaze was intense, and I felt exposed under the weight of it. "It's scheduled for three weeks from now."

My breath caught in my throat as the reality of becoming Luna settled in. "Three weeks?" I repeated, my voice barely above a whisper.

"Yes," he replied, crossing his arms, his demeanor cool and detached.

I swallowed hard, the implications of his words crashing over me like a tidal wave. "Alpha, I—"

"Look, Marliene," he interrupted, his tone firm and lacking warmth. "This marriage is purely political. You're not my type, and I'm not looking for any commitment. You're only here to satisfy the council's demands."

The words hit me like a slap. I expected some acknowledgment of our bond, perhaps even a hint of affection, but instead, I was met with coldness. "I understand," I said, my voice trembling slightly.

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a striking ruby ring, its deep red hue glimmering in the dim light. "This is for you," he said, holding it out. "It's an expensive ring, nothing more, but it signifies your role as my mate."

I took the ring, feeling the weight of it in my palm. It was beautiful, a beautiful reminder of the reality I was embracing. "Thank you," I murmured, slipping it onto my finger.

His expression remained impassive, and I couldn't shake the feeling that I was merely a pawn in his game. "You'll do what is required of you," he added.

The next two days passed in a blur of unspoken tensions. I tried to find my footing among the servants, but their disdain was too loud. They whispered behind my back, rolled their eyes when I passed, and ignored every attempt to engage with them.

One afternoon, as I was organizing my room, one of the maids barged into my room. "Lady Ariel says you should prepare her afternoon tea."

Yesterday, I would have jumped at the order, but today? I decided to be the Luna they didn't think they'd get. So I ignored her words. She waited a few minutes and saw that I didn't budge.

"Marliene, did you hear me?" she snapped.

I turned to her gently. Then I got up and slowly made my way toward her while staring intently at her. "Did you just raise your voice at me?" I asked.

She scoffed. "What? Do you think you are above the servants here? Weren't you just a floor scrubber at the Ashthorns' house?"

Before she could finish her sentence, I threw my palm across her face, letting it hit with a loud smack.

She stared at me with her mouth wide open, matching the shocked look in her eyes. She tried to speak but ended up stuttering uncontrollably.

I smirked. "Good! Now you know not to disrespect me. Make sure to spread the word to everyone, because the next person to disrespect me—regardless of who they are—will receive a greater punishment. Now tell your queen mother what I did and said."

I pushed her out and slammed the door shut. My heart was racing rapidly, but I knew that staying quiet would only make things worse for me.

That evening, I summoned all the servants, this time with Lex by my side. As we entered the common area, I made sure to return their stares.

"Listen up," I began, my voice steady. "I will not tolerate any more disrespect in this household. You will treat me as your Luna, or there will be consequences."

They shifted uncomfortably, glancing at each other for support. But I pressed on. "Lady Ariel may have tried to undermine me, but I am not afraid of her. Anyone who disrespects me will answer to Alpha Lex, and trust me, he will not be lenient."

Lex stepped forward, his presence commanding. "If anyone here has a problem with Marliene, they have a problem with me. I expect complete loyalty and respect from all of you. Is that clear?"

The room fell silent, and I could see the fear in their eyes. It was a satisfying sight.

"Good," I said, feeling a surge of triumph. "Now, get back to work."

As I turned to leave, I caught a glimpse of Ariel in the corner of my eye. Her expression was a mix of disbelief and fury. I chuckled, I must have drawn a battle line or something.

  • Back For My Throne And Your Luna   Chapter Four – Frost and Fire

Marliene's POV I woke to a hushed manor, the usual sounds of bustling servants replaced by an unsettling silence that hung in the air like a thick fog. Every corner of the Moorgrave Manor felt heavy with tension, and I could sense the anxiety swirling around me. I slipped out of bed, the chill of the wooden floor sending a shiver up my spine. Something felt off, and I needed to find out what it was. "Gotta know if my future mother-in-law is up to something else today," I murmured as I washed my body. The woman had been trampling all over my nerves, and no matter how much I complained to Lex, he never said anything to her, almost as if she had him charmed or something. As I dressed, I caught snippets of hushed conversations drifting through the hallways. I tiptoed to my door and pulled it open slightly. The servants were huddled together, their voices barely above whispers. I strained to hear their gossip. "It was a human man. He brought a letter with an unknown seal," one whisper

Rune's POV I stood at the edge of the castle grounds, my heart pounding in my chest. I was just a boy of eighteen, but the world felt heavy on my shoulders. The dream was vivid, a nightmare I had relived countless times: my father's funeral, the weight of his death hanging in the air like a thick fog. And then, the moment that shattered my life — being thrown out of the castle, banished on the very day he was buried. Ariel's words kept ringing in my ears. "Traitor! I saw him poison his father! He was jealous of my son." She screamed and wailed as though I was the vilest thing ever. Looking into her eyes, I remembered the day my mother passed, how she hugged me before this very pack, saying I could call her Mom. I sobbed, thinking that her years of anger and bitterness would be buried with my dead mother. What a fool I was. "He must be banished! We can't have such a hateful being in our midst." Ariel's voice was the loudest from the crowd. But banishment was the easiest punishme

Marliene's POV"Scrub harder, Marliene! You dirty pig.""That's a new one," I murmured to myself. Usually, it was just "Scrub harder, Marliene." Now it had a suffix attached to it. How glorious. My life was far from glorious. If anything, it was a cycle of constant humiliation, hate, anger, and helplessness. Every morning I woke up, I questioned why I was still alive. Why can't You just kill me off? I would ask. My life means nothing to anyone. I am a wolfless, orphaned, lowly servant. My life revolved around serving the Ashthorns and their spoiled daughter, Celeste.Celeste took a special kind of pleasure in making my life harder than it already was, and I could never understand why. I wasn't the only servant in their house. No, not even the only young female servant. It almost felt like there was something about me that made her feel threatened. It couldn't be because I was prettier than her, because there were other servants who resembled divine beings. But I remained her biggest t
