Morning came too quietly in the mansion.

Not peaceful.

Controlled like the house itself was holding its breath.

Emily stirred slowly, her body still adjusting to the unfamiliar comfort of the room. The night before lingered in fragments Ethan’s presence, the strange calm, the unsettling sense of safety that didn’t fully make sense.

She shifted slightly

and froze.

Ethan was standing in her room.

Watching her.

For a moment, her mind refused to catch up.

“…Ethan?”

“No,” he said calmly, as if answering the question in her eyes. “You’re not dreaming.”

Her eyes widened instantly. She grabbed the bedsheet and pulled it tightly against her body, sitting up in a rush.

“What are you doing here?” she snapped. “This is my room. It’s supposed to be private.”

Ethan tilted his head slightly, completely unbothered.

“Private?” he repeated. “You’ve walked into my study more than once. My space. My rules.”

He took a slow step forward, his presence steady, deliberate.

“I’m just returning the favor.”

Emily frowned. “That’s not the same thing.”

“It is,” he said simply. “You just don’t like it.”

Silence settled between them for a brief moment before his tone shifted colder, more intentional.

“The gala is tonight.”

Emily’s grip tightened on the sheet.

“You’ll be there with me,” he continued. “As my wife. Convincing. Controlled. Perfect.”

He paused slightly, letting the words settle.

“You’ll make them believe I married you because I wanted to.”

Emily nodded stiffly. “I understand.”

“Good.”

He turned toward the door, but stopped just before leaving.

“I brought you breakfast.”

Emily blinked, her gaze shifting.

A tray sat neatly arranged beside her toast, avocado, tea.

She stared at it, then back at the door as it shut behind him.

“…He makes breakfast now?” she muttered under her breath.

Then she scoffed softly.

“Not just crazy… a whole different level.”

By midday, the mansion was no longer quiet.

Stylists moved in and out of the space, carrying fabric, makeup kits, and quiet urgency with them. Voices stayed low, movements precise, everything unfolding with controlled efficiency.

Through it all, Lila stayed close.

Calm. Steady. Reassuring.

“You’ll look amazing,” she said softly, adjusting a detail on Emily’s dress.

Emily wasn’t so sure.

Not because of the way she looked

but because of everything behind it.

Just as the final touches were being made, her phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

Her heart dropped before she even opened it.

Hi baby girl.

Her fingers tightened around the phone.

Do you miss me?

Her chest tightened.

I see you’ve found yourself inside a protective cage.

Her breathing slowed, forced into control.

You think that paper marriage will protect you from me?

Her pulse spiked.

I’m always watching.

A pause.

Enjoy your gala.

Emily locked her phone immediately.

“No,” she whispered under her breath.

“You don’t get to do this tonight.”

She lifted her chin slightly, forcing herself to stay steady.

“I’m not letting you ruin this.”

But deep down

The fear had already settled.

By evening, everything was ready.

Emily stepped out of her room slowly.

The dress fit perfectly elegant, striking, and quietly dangerous.

Even Lila paused when she saw her.

“…You look stunning.”

Emily forced a small smile. “Let’s just survive tonight.”

Downstairs, Ethan was already waiting.

When he turned and saw her, he paused

just for a second too long.

Then his expression reset, as if nothing had happened.

“…You clean up nicely.”

Emily tilted her head slightly. “You too.”

“I always do,” he replied.

A brief silence passed between them before they moved together toward the exit.

The ride to the gala felt like a slow descent into a world Emily didn’t belong to.

City lights blurred past the window in streaks of gold and red, flickering like silent warnings. She sat beside Ethan, her clutch held tightly in her lap.

He didn’t look at her.

Didn’t speak.

And the silence stretched between them thin, sharp, suffocating.

But Emily wasn’t thinking about him.

She was thinking about the message.

Jason.

Watching.

Waiting.

Her chest tightened.

He wouldn’t come here…

But even as she thought it, she didn’t believe it.

The car came to a stop.

The hotel rose before them grand, glowing, impossible to ignore.

Lights. Cameras. Voices.

A world that fed on appearances.

Ethan stepped out first, composed and untouchable. Then he turned and offered his arm.

“Smile,” he said quietly. “Tonight, you’re Mrs. Ethan Reed.”

Emily took his arm.

And the mask settled into place.

Inside, the ballroom shimmered.

Crystal lights reflected across polished floors. Soft music filled the air. Laughter, expensive and effortless, echoed through the crowd.

Everything looked perfect.

Everything felt false.

Emily stayed close to Ethan, every step measured, every breath controlled. Eyes followed them. Whispers lingered in their wake.

Then

“Emily!”

Claire.

She approached effortlessly, dressed in emerald, confidence radiating from her.

Her smile was warm.

Too warm.

“You look incredible,” Claire said, pulling her into a quick hug.

“Thanks,” Emily replied. “You do too.”

Claire’s eyes flicked briefly toward Ethan before returning to her.

“How’s he behaving?” she asked lightly. “Still brooding and silent?”

Emily raised a brow. “You seem very interested.”

Claire laughed too quickly.

“He’s my boss. Hard not to notice.”

Emily studied her for a moment.

Something felt off.

But she let it go.

For now.

The night blurred into a series of conversations, introductions, and empty smiles.

Ethan moved through it all with precision perfect posture, controlled charm, calculated words.

And Emily stayed beside him.

A beautiful accessory.

A convincing lie.

But the message never left her mind.

Not for a second.

Eventually, Ethan leaned closer.

“Come with me.”

They stepped out onto the balcony.

The air was cooler there. Quieter. Real.

Emily exhaled deeply, the tension in her chest easing just slightly.

“You did well tonight,” Ethan said.

“That was exhausting,” she admitted. “Everyone looks like they were born into this.”

“It’s a circus,” he replied. “Don’t mistake it for anything real.”

She glanced at him.

“You live in it.”

“I don’t trust it either.”

That surprised her.

But before she could respond, his phone buzzed.

“I need to take this,” he said. “Stay here.”

And just like that

he was gone.

The moment he disappeared, something shifted.

The silence changed.

Not calm.

Not safe.

Emily felt it immediately.

That presence.

She turned slowly.

The balcony was empty.

But her body didn’t relax.

Her instincts screamed.

Then

movement.

At the far end.

A figure.

Still.

Watching.

Her breath caught. Her heart slammed against her chest.

Jason.

He didn’t move closer.

Didn’t speak.

He simply stood there

before stepping back into the shadows.

And disappearing.

Just like that.

Gone.

Emily stood frozen.

Cold.

Shaking.

He’s here.

Not attacking.

Not approaching.

Just watching.

Waiting.

When she finally returned inside, her face was pale, her hands trembling slightly.

Ethan noticed immediately.

“What happened?”

“Nothing,” she said quickly. “Just… cold.”

But it wasn’t the cold.

It was the knowing.

Jason was out there.

Somewhere.

Watching her.

Claire froze in the middle of her room after she heard the faint sound outside her door. Her heart pounded heavily against her ribs as she stared at the door. The mansion was supposed to be asleep. Richard had gone to bed hours ago. Ethan was resting upstairs. Emily had already slipped back into his room. So who was out there? She waited a few seconds, then walked over and opened the door. The hallway stretched empty under the soft yellow lights. Darkness stretched across the floor, and everything looked still. Claire stepped out barefoot, the cool tiles sending a small shiver up her legs. “Emily?” she whispered. No answer. She looked left and right, then let out a shaky breath. Probably nothing. She didn’t need more trouble tonight. After one last glance, she went back inside and locked the door. The click sounded loud in the quiet room. She picked up her phone again and dialed. Jason answered with clear irritation. “Why are you disturbing me in the middle of the night?” C

Emily’s eyes narrowed the moment she saw Claire standing too close to Ethan’s bed. The room was dim, with only the little glow of the bedside lamp. For a second, she just stared, trying to understand what she had just woken up to see, or is it a dream. Claire had been leaning far too close to Ethan. Close enough that it made Emily’s stomach twist uncomfortably.“What are you doing here?” Emily asked quietly, her voice low so she wouldn’t wake Ethan.Claire straightened up quickly. “Nothing.”Emily got off the bed carefully. She didn’t want to disturb Ethan, who was still making tiny sounds from the pain, but she also wasn’t letting this go. “Nothing?” she repeated, her throat feeling dry.Claire folded her arms. “Lower your voice.”Emily took a slow breath, trying to keep herself calm. “No. You walked into the room in the middle of the night. You were standing over him, and now you’re telling me it’s nothing?”Claire glanced toward the bed. “You’re going to w

Emily stood in the living room, staring at Claire in disbelief. The two large suitcases sitting near the staircase made the whole situation feel too real.“Are you serious?” she asked slowly.Claire adjusted the hand of her handbag and looked around the living room like she already belonged there. “What? Why are you looking at me like that?”Emily folded her arms. “You packed your actual bags, Claire. You’re talking about staying here and you didn’t even think to mention it to me first?”Claire gave a small shrug. “I honestly didn’t think I needed permission from my own friend.”The word “friend” came out with a strange feeling. It didn’t feel warm. Emily noticed it right away, but she was too tired to start arguing. Claire continued talking while glancing upstairs toward Ethan’s room. “Besides, after everything that happened today, this is the safest option. Ethan needs someone handling work from here. The shareholders are suspicious, and Victor is definitely pl

The hospital room turned heavy the moment Ethan realized he couldn’t feel his leg. One second everyone had been relieved he was awake. The next second, panic filled the room. It felt hard to breathe. The glass cup slipped from his hand and shattered loudly on the floor. His voice came out shaky and scared.“I can’t feel my leg.”Emily froze beside the bed. Ethan tried moving his leg again, but nothing happened. He stared down at it, hoping maybe his body just needed a little more time. But it stayed still. His breathing became fast and uneven.“No,” he said quickly. “No, no… something’s wrong.”The doctor stepped forward right away while two nurses rushed into the room. “Everybody needs to step outside for a moment,” the doctor said calmly.Ethan shook his head and gripped Emily’s hand tighter. “No. She stays.”Claire turned sharply. “But the doctor”“It’s fine,” the doctor interrupted. “She can stay. The rest of you wait outside.”Claire’s face chang

The hospital room grew quiet again after Ethan whispered those words. For a few long seconds, nobody moved. Emily stood right beside the bed with Ethan’s hand still loosely wrapped around hers. The others stared at them with different looks on their faces.Lila looked like she might cry from happiness. Richard appeared shocked but also strangely relieved, as if something had finally clicked for him. Claire stood frozen near the window, her smile no longer looking real.Emily didn’t know what to say. The words “my love” kept echoing in her head. Ethan looked worn out from the surgery and medicine, but the way he kept staring at her made her chest feel warm and nervous at the same time. His fingers stayed gently around hers, like he wasn’t even aware he was still holding on.Claire suddenly let out a small, awkward laugh, trying to break the heavy tension in the room. “Okay… wait,” she said, keeping her voice light. “Did you just say something, or am I hearing things becau

The hospital hallway carried that strong antiseptic smell mixed with cold air from the vents. Everything felt blurry and far away to Emily, like she was underwater and the world was happening somewhere above her. Voices drifted around her, footsteps moved past the room, and machines beeped steadily nearby, but none of it felt real yet.The last clear thing she remembered was Richard’s voice shaking as he responded to the doctor. He’s losing too much blood. After that, everything went dark. Now her eyes were slowly opening again. The bright ceiling light stung at first, so she blinked a few times until she could see straight. At first, all she caught were voices close by.“What are we supposed to do now?” Lila sounded like she was holding back tears. “Richard, this is bad. This is really bad.”“I know that already,” Richard answered, his voice tired and rough, like he hadn’t sat down once since they got there. “I’m trying to stay calm.”Then another vo
