The road was still hot from the day’s sun when my friends, Carson and Lisa, drove away. I stood there alone as the thick Pennsylvania woods closed in around me. My paws still throbbed, a leftover sensation from the miles I’d spent running in my wolf form. I looked toward the trees where the Silverblade pack territory began, i wasn't just looking for a new home, I was looking for a safe place. I needed to hide from the man who had spent years making me feel worthless. As I crossed the invisible border line, the forest changed, It felt like someone was watching me. The quiet was unsettling, broken only by a faint, high-pitched hum that sounded like electronic security sensors. Then, the hum turned into a snarl. Two large wolves stepped out from the bushes, their eyes bright in the dark. They drooled as they circled me, moving like hunters that had just found their target. I reached for the small bag Lisa had packed for me, trying to use it as a shield, but it was useless against three hundred pounds of muscle and canines. Before I could scream, a brown wolf slammed into me. I hit the dirt hard, the wind was knocked right out of my lungs. My wolf, Val, started scratching at the back of my mind, desperate to push out and fight, but I knew we were outmatched. The brown wolf began to change, his bones shifted until a shirtless messy-haired warrior was standing over me. He didn't look sorry for me at all, he looked at me like I was a traspaser to be dealt with. "Shift!" he growled. "Now!" I let the change take over. Shifting always hurts a bit, and it left me shivering and naked on the forest floor, i ran to grab my red tank top and pants from my bag, my hands were shaking because I could feel them staring at me. "I mean no harm," I said putting both hands up to show it. "I’m looking for safety," I choked out. "I want to join the training program. I heard Silverblade was fair to people." The two warriors looked at each other and laughed. "Silverblade is for the strong," the dark-haired one said. He tossed a pair of heavy zip-ties to his friend. "And for your information rogues aren't acceptable in our territory!." "I'm not a rogue!" I shouted, but before I could finish the sentence they restrained my hands. The last thing I saw was a tranquilizer needle pointed at my neck. "Welcome to the jail, stray," the brown-haired wolf whispered. Then, everything went black. When I woke up, I was in a cell made of iron. It smelled like fear and urine, I sat in the corner, rubbing my sore wrists. I had acted on impulse, running away from my stepfather, only to end up in a cell. I was a nobody here. I had no rank, no ID, no rights, and certainly no Alpha release letter. That was why they called me a rogue and a runaway. Suddenly, the cell door at the end of the hall opened. The footsteps that followed weren't fast like a guard’s, they were deliberate and slow, belonging to someone who was in charge. As the person got closer, a scent hit me instantly, it smelled like rain on dry earth, cinnamon, and a wild scent that made my pulse race. "Mate!" Val howled inside my head, her spirit bowing down in respect. I looked up breathless. Standing behind the bars was a tall imposing man dressed in full black outfit looking handsome with a stubble beards. His gold eyes watched the way my pulse throbbed in my neck then dragged back to my lips then my eyes... This wasn't just some soldier. This was the Alpha! He narrowed his eyes, his nose flared as he caught my scent, the air in the tiny cell became thick, making it hard to breathe. His gaze moved to my body, scanning me slowly as if looking for a fault... he gave me a judgmental look that made me uncomfortable. "Female," he finally spoke in a low baritone voice. "I’m told I have a trespasser. A stray pretending to be a refugee." I stood up. My legs felt weak, but I kept my chin up. "I'm not a stray. I'm a survivor." The Alpha stepped closer...the power coming off him was overwhelming. He gripped the bars until his knuckles stiffened. His face twisted into an expression that wasn't welcoming at all, it looked like pure hatred instead. "Survivors follow rules," he countered. "And my first rule is that I don't keep trash in my territory, mate or not." My heart stopped. He knew! He felt the bond, and he was already stepping back, his expression still cold..~Elvira~Gabriel rose slowly from his seat and cleared his throat. “Elvira is a warrior and a respected member of my pack,” he began... “Months ago she came to Silverblade seeking refuge. She claimed she was running from her abusive stepfather. Recently I learned that this same man also murdered her mother.”Shocked murmurs rolled through the room…Elders and Council members turned to one another with widened eyes…across the hall, my stepfather and Alpha Roland both froze.“Beta Stephen?” one of the Council members called. My stepfather stood and walked forward until he was only a few paces from me.“Is it true,” the Council member asked, “that you murdered her mother…your late wife…and that you physically abused Warrior Elvira while she still lived with you in Rivermoon Pack?”Stephen spread his hands in an expression of innocence. “Council Member Regnar, you have known me for many years…how could I murder my own wife and abuse my stepdaughter without a single pack member noticing?
~Elvira~ “So what’s going to happen now? Do I get punished or what?” I asked looking between Unit Commander Karen and Gabriel. They exchanged a silent glance. Gabriel cleared his throat, but before he could speak the door swung open…Unit Commander Manson and Head Warrior Sefa strode in with authority aura rolling off them… My heart sank into my stomach... I grimaced and tried to shrink into myself…praying the floor would open and swallow me whole. Manson was my superior at work… my trainer…someone I genuinely respected. The fact that both he and Sefa had been summoned told me just how serious this had become. “Alpha Gabriel, the Council and the Elders are calling for an emergency meeting in the Council Hall,” Sefa announced. Manson’s gaze stayed locked on me, grim and unreadable. How was I going to dig myself out of this? My stepfather had triggered everything. I had thought I was ready to face him, but the moment I saw his face every old wound ripped open…
~Elvira~ “Gabriel!” “Gabriel!” Robert and I screamed at the same time, but Gabriel didn’t even flinch. His hand was locked around my stepfather’s throat… Stephen clawed desperately at his grip gasping for air. Alpha Roland lunged forward to pull Gabriel off, but Gabriel shoved him away with so much force that Roland stumbled backward while Calvin had to catch him before he fell…the shock on Roland’s face was almost satisfying to watch. I know I had mentioned about the physical abuse from my stepfather... but when he had asked me to introduce him so he could put a face to the man, I never imagined this would be his reaction… The entire hall had gone silent except for the soft background music…every conversation died…every eye turned toward the Alpha of Silverblade choking a visiting Beta in the middle of the annual gathering… “I think it’s about time we had a little talk. What do you think?” Gabriel said in a calm voice as if the rest of the room didn’t exist. “I
~Elvira POV~I finished packing the last of the fresh fruit and the wrapped dishes Uncle Silas had sent from the kitchen into my refrigerator.“This should last us a few weeks until payday,” I murmured, trying to smile even as nervousness and anxiety coiled in my veins...Today was the day. The annual party. He would finally be here. After all these months, I might come face to face with the man I had escaped. How would he react? Would he cause a scene in front of everyone?I had originally hoped for a free day…maybe even the chance to wear a beautiful gown and move through the crowd unnoticed…instead, Unit Commander Manson had assigned me to security…I dressed in the black suit and fitted slacks, slipped the earpiece and my warrior ID into my pocket, and pulled my hair into a tight ponytail…then left the safety of my apartment and headed to the briefing.By the time I arrived, most of the security team was already present…thirty of us dressed head to toe in black, looking more l
~Elvira~ The walk to the mansion was silent. I kept my eyes down, but noticed high sensory cameras tucked into the oak branches, their red lights blinking. Silverblade had a massive security network. The pack house was a large mansion of marble and white stone, beautiful but intimidating.
~Elvira~ ~Present~ The cell door hissed shut behind me, the locking mechanism echoing down all the way down, after the chill of the cell, I felt completely weak, my muscles trembling, my legs buckled, so I dropped my hands to my knees to keep from fainting. "What do you think you're doing?" a
~ Elvira~ "I’m Lisa, and that handsome giant over there is my brother, Carson," Lisa said, her voice sounded bright and eager. She pointed toward the door where a tall, blonde guy stood. He was 6'1", with lean, functional muscle. He gave me a sheepish smile, his bright blue eyes filled with a
~Elvira~ ~Flashback: Two Weeks Ago~ I ran. I had been moving for over an hour, the damp earth of the forest floor cold against my paws. Every joint throbbed and my muscles burned from exhaustion, but the terror of being caught kept me moving. I had to escape that house and the man who ha
