Harley~

Pilot gave me a shut your mouth, Missy, look before leading me down one hall of mystery to his office. He closes the door, sits at his desk, gesturing for me to sit as well.

“Is Cervantes one of the stalker victims?”

“I can neither deny nor confirm yet; until now, Mr. Cervantes has been nameless. The police department must inform his family of his death, so if you make me a copy of his personnel file, I’ll be out of your way.”

“I can’t do that, Detective, not without a warrant. We also have a confidentiality clause, and I could lose my job for breaking it.”

Oh, really? I narrowed my eyes at him and shifted in my chair. “Did you miss the part about him being dead?! Mr. Piolt, I can take the time to go all the way downtown, stand in line at the clerk’s office during lunchtime, wait for the judge to come back to chambers, and present them with a warrant to be signed. Then, I promise to dedicate the same time when I shut down your office to conduct a thorough forensic sweep. Why don’t you save us both some trouble and give me the damn file?”

That’s what I thought! He made a copy of the file and handed it over. I took it with a smile as I stood up from the chair.

“Have a good day, Mr. Piolt.”

Back in my car, I typed the address into my GPS and headed toward Cervantes’ home. It’s never easy to tell a loved one that a family member is deceased. The death announcement was the worst part of the job, but it won’t be an issue today, I see as I pull over to the curb. The GPS led me to an empty lot.

Just fucking great, I kill the engine and get out. An older couple sitting in the breezeway of the neighboring building catches my eye, so I approach them; they are so endearing, still holding hands in their early 70s. I’m loving it, and I’m jealous too.

“Good afternoon.” I showed them Cervantes’s pick. “Have either of you seen this man?”

They look at the photo and then up at me. “No, Detective.” The gentleman said.

My phone rings. I thank them for their time and get back into my car. Before accepting the call, I turn over the engine and connect my phone to the Bluetooth.

“Yeah, Captain.”

“Where are you, Detective?”

He sounded ready to come through the cellar waves and grab my ass! His urgency, hand me rubbing my aching forehead, because I know I will not like where this goes.

“I was following a lead that led me nowhere; on a positive note, thanks to the glove, we know the ID of our third victim.”

“That makes it two so far for the day. We have just identified the first victim. He has used several aliases, but the fingerprints match an Edward Tolley.”

“Where did the IAFIS hit come from?”

“Oklahoma State Police, Mr Tolley, then Mr. Atkins, did a couple of years in McAlester for holding up a convenience store. Also, we have visitors here. I’m going to need you back ASAP!”

You can’t make this shit up! I shake my head; humans never fail to amuse me. “I am on the way.”

So much for searching for the van; it would have to wait, though I was hoping maybe the stalker had left me something else behind. The first thing I saw when entering the squad room was another bouquet of peonies and baby’s breath sitting on my desk. They took my breath away, and I hurried to get the card from the little plastic fork and read, “I will forever love you.”

Though I wished he wouldn’t, I rubbed my thumb across his handwritten words as tears stung my eyes, which in turn locked onto the phone as I was thinking about calling Ben.

‘You can’t do that, Harley; you know it isn’t fair to tease him. Are you willing to give me up and, being a werewolf, to be with Ben? Because that’s the only way it could ever work.’

The answer is no. Rae is my best friend, and I wouldn’t want to be without her. Nor could I ever be happy living a lie and denying what I am. That is a sacrifice I wouldn’t make for anyone.

‘I know, Rae, I have done enough damage already.’

I wiped away the tears from my cheek and returned the card when I sensed my Captain coming up behind me. He, too, focuses first on the flowers, which would be hard to miss, and grunts with a roll of his eyes. He doesn’t look thrilled to see me.

“Come with me!”

We go down the hall to the conference room. Detectives from the DEA, Nelson and Sikes, and Dr. Lyles, our resident psych profiler, already sat at the table.

The hair on the back of my neck stood up, and I locked eyes with my Captain, nodding toward the two DEA agents. Mitch already knows I don’t work well with others. “Why are they here?”

“They got the same correspondence we did, but for a different reason.”

“It’s good to see you again, Detective.” Nelson is wearing his signature cowboy hat. I still haven’t figured out how such a country bumpkin wound up in LA.

I shift my chair up to the desk. “Yeah, likewise. Can we get on with this?”

Nelson produces a jacket as thick as I have ever seen and slides it across the table to us. Captain Howard does the honors and opens it.

“Meet Kevin Coalds, another alias of our Mr. Tolley.” Nelson pointed toward the mugshot on the front page. “Doctor Jekyll hasn’t got shit on this guy! Whatever Kevin did that got him killed wasn’t paying the bills. The DEA had eyes on him for running drugs.”

“What did you find on the other victim, Detective?”

I first handed Dr Lyles the coroner’s report on Cervantes, and she put it beside Kevin’s for comparison.

“Joswa Cervantes, and not much. I tracked him down to his employer, but the address on his personnel file was a vacant lot. Big shock there. The phone number he listed as his home phone belongs to the dry cleaner over on the boulevard. However, I don’t think he is involved in your drug ring.”

Lyles looked up from the files. “I agree with Detective Gibson.”

“How can you be so sure?” Sikes raised his eyebrows at Lyles. “One can run them without partaking.”

Harley~The universe doesn't listen, and the next thing I see before me is the most beautiful, peaceful place I could ever imagine. I somehow know that it is Sauther Lake; I am home. Not wasting another moment on the nightmare, I step into the scene, turn, and see Lauren has appeared beside me. "I am ready to come home, Lauren."Lauren turned to face me, hummed a familiar tune, and started moving her hands in unfamiliar patterns all around me. My insides heated as her movements intensified, as if she were branding something on my soul. She put the stone she'd held into my hand when she was done. "You don't have to be alone anymore, Harley." She disappeared into the mist. "Wait, I have so many questions!I'm once again alone in the darkness. "Let me go home!" Someone or something must have taken pity on me, as I find myself back in Melinda's living room, still on my knees with my face buried in my hands. The fire has gone out in more ways than one. "Did you find what you were looking

Harley~ Nick pampered me in every way he saw fit, and I was loving it. One might not put a bounty hunter and an attentive caregiver in the same category, but I sure would now. After my bubble bath, he put me to bed and snuggled close to me, wrapping me in his cocoon as if I were his butterfly about to emerge. Delighted and satisfied, I closed my eyes and drifted into a peaceful sleep; however, it didn't last long. My eyes flew open as I woke in a cold sweat after finding myself alone in the delivery room. With no Ben or Nick by my side, I clung to Nick, only breathing again when I was sure it was just a dream. My eyes filled with tears, and I closed them as tightly as possible as I begged the goddess to hear my prayer. This had to be Nick's child growing inside of me; it just has to be! 'You don't need to get yourself so worked up, Harley. It isn't good for you or our baby. We will know for sure tomorrow, but it won't matter to Nick.' 'Maybe not right away, but eventually, he

Nick~About ten minutes later, I burst through the door of her apartment to find Harley pacing the floor. Of course, I reach for her, but she backs away from me, a feeling I don't like."Sit." She gestures toward the sofa, and I take a seat."What is wrong, Amante?"With tears streaming down her cheeks, she wrings her hands and paces the floor in front of me. "I am pregnant, Nick.""That's amazing; why are you crying, Harley?""Shut up, damn it, Nick, listen to me for a minute; it's not that simple because I don't know who the baby belongs to."I have never been so high, or so low, so quickly; Harley stops in front of me as if she's waiting for her punishment, but I don't have any to give. There's no doubt in my mind that Harley loves me, and I can clearly see that she is already punishing herself enough; still, she backs away as I reach for her."There's more, Nick."What more could they possibly be? She looked at me, and it didn't matter. "Tell me whatever you like, but I've already

Harley~We arrived at the station separately and were on time for the morning briefing. As I suspected, the stalker hasn't returned to either branch, and nobody has used the debit card. A weary sigh escaped me somehow. I'm feeling neither shocked nor surprised. Captain Howard wants us back on the streets in full force, but I reminded him of my appointment. My Wolfman may not be an agent, but he is smart."I'll be out of the office sometime this afternoon as well. My SAC is expecting an update on our progress."I focused on the Captain. "Did we get anything from Peter?" "Yes, a couple of descriptions, but neither of the sketches matches our suspects. I need you both back here ASAP."Howard calls the powwow, and we all leave the SCIF room. I want a moment alone with Nick before my appointment, but I know it's not appropriate. He is in my head, before I get out of the parking lot, telling me he loves me and will wait to hear from me, and I smile as I return his sentiment.'He's worried

Harley~Nick grabs his still-packed bag from our trip to Culer City, and we head up the stairs. He has no trouble with the lock that sticks and hands me my keys after opening the door. My stomach is doing somersaults as I flip on the ceiling fan light and put the keys on the hook by the door before turning to face him."I'm sure it's not what you're used to, but it's comfortable."He tossed his bag onto the sofa and pulled me into him. "As long as you are with me, a cardboard box under a bridge would satisfy me, Amante."I'm picturing our cardboard house rocking on that bridge and feeling the impact of my dirty thoughts on my cheeks. Nick grinned at me as if he'd read my mind. Taking his hand, I led him down the hallway to my bedroom, which I instantly regretted.Nick leveled me with a cocky grin when he smelled himself coming from my bed. His eyes are searching for the source as mine focus on the pillowcase from the hotel, and I feel the heat creep up my cheeks all over again. As a d

Harley~Perhaps against his better judgment, Nick leaves me alone in the car again. It's a wonder he looks almost as good going as he does coming. The way his ass fills those jeans starts a fire as I watch him until he enters the Bodega. My soul is singing the song of his admission of love for me as I close my eyes and rest my head on the rest. Although it had been a Freudian slip on Nick's part, I knew he meant it. Beautiful pinks and yellows claim the sky as the sun sets, and a cool breeze blows off the bay. Not being able to resist, I leaned forward, turned the switch, and rolled down the windows. The pungent smell of diesel fuel from the bay also wafts through the car, silencing my soul song and snatching me back to reality; now I am fighting the door handle for release.Nick calls my name as he returns to find me leaning out of the car seat and heaving. Only the goddess knows what he's thinking, probably that he's gotten himself in a mess with me. He puts the cupholder and bag o
