Chapter 136 Betrayal

Author: Day Torres
Lucy couldn't say she wasn't scared—though she was just as impressed. The commotion inside the precinct was overwhelming.

Claudia had told her it would be easy: a bit of drama, a lot of money, and they just had to wait until Alexandra and Scott were desperate enough to agree once the ransom call came. But she had never, not even in her worst-case scenario, imagined that Interpol would be involved.

She saw the officers gearing up and remembered those words, "We move in half an hour."

That meant she had a thirty-minute head start. She hurried the receptionist to return her belongings but didn't turn on her phone—just in case.

She got into the first taxi she found and gave the address of a bakery on the outskirts of the city. From there, she walked a couple of blocks and grabbed another cab that took her deeper into the suburbs. Three times she switched taxis, hoping to throw off anyone who might be following. What she didn't know was that the people trailing her weren't the kind

Liam didn't have time to answer before their mouths crashed together again, this time with more passion, more hunger. His hands roamed down her back until they cupped her ass, pulling her tighter against his erection. Their bodies were fused, and it was impossible to ignore the brutal physical attraction sparking between them. Maxine sighed against his lips and traced the tip of her tongue along his jaw before tilting her head back and licking her lips, as if she knew exactly what Liam was thinking. "You're a hard man to resist," she whispered low and provocatively. "And we're still on our honeymoon." She dragged him across the street to the parking lot, shoved him into her car, and slid behind the wheel before he even had a chance to protest. "How about we go have a little fun, hubby?" The tires screeched as she floored it. But if Liam thought she was driving wild for kicks, her sharp eyes—locked on the traffic and the SUV suddenly tailing them—told a different story. She sw

Liam turned to look at her, eyes wide. It was clear he was on the verge of exploding. "Stay out of this," he snapped, and she raised an eyebrow. "Yes, stay out of this," the girl whimpered, and Max's blood boiled. "I've seen scenes that would turn anyone's stomach, but a woman literally crying at a man's feet is the worst of them all. Get up already! He's not even that good in bed!" Maxine snarled at the girl, who looked at her like she was insane. Liam pressed his lips together and tried to help the girl up. "Leave it, I'll handle her myself," he growled, but froze when Maxine pulled out a chair, sat down across from them, and crossed her legs. "What are you doing?" "Watching how you handle it," she replied coolly. The girl sobbed a little more, but Liam yanked her to her feet. "Max, this is Izzy, my ex-assistant," he muttered awkwardly. "Don't worry about her, she'll leave." "No, I won't! How could you do this to me?" Izzy shouted, stamping her foot like a spoiled

Liam walked over to the curtains and pulled them open, only to see a crowd of journalists waiting outside the house. "What the hell makes them think they have a right to our privacy?" she snapped, completely losing it. "We're not nobodies," he muttered, staring out the window—and she froze. "Shit. This is how it'll always be…" Maxine clenched her teeth. With so many vultures circling around, she wouldn't be able to do her job properly. And she wasn't about to allow that. "Wanna bet?" she hissed, leaping out of bed and storming out of the room. Liam ran after her. She had a crazed look in her eyes. They ended up in the garage. "You… what are you gonna do?" he asked, watching her inspect the pressure washers. "I've got insomnia. I'm going to clean the garden. You coming?" Maxine dragged one of the machines with her. Liam had no idea what she was up to, but he grabbed another one and followed. He watched her hook up hoses he didn't even know existed, and a second later she

Maxine tried to turn around, but the man pressed the gun harder against the back of her neck. "Walk," he ordered in a rough voice, and she hiked up her dress and started moving. He shoved her toward a dark car parked at the far end of the street and yanked open the back door to push her inside. But he never got the chance—because in the same instant, Maxine drove her heel down hard on the top of his foot, then spun sharply, snapping his wrist in a single movement and slamming him flat onto the pavement. Maxine snatched the gun from his hand and pressed it against his temple. "Don't shoot!" the man who had tried to kidnap her cried out. "Who the hell are you, and what do you want with me?" she growled, cocking the hammer so he could see she wasn't bluffing. If there was one thing Maxine Johnson had never feared, it was pulling a trigger. "I… I thought… I thought you were the nun. I was wrong…" the man stammered, and Maxine smacked him hard. "And who wants the nun?" He he

[One week earlier] Maxine sat on the bed in her cell, elbows resting on her knees, thinking for the thousandth time about everything that had happened. She'd been in prison for six months, and none of the few comrades she had left from the army had come to see her. So she was surprised when she was told she had a visitor. "Lieutenant Johnson. May I have a moment?" General Morrison asked. She just lifted her eyes to see him—and the man who accompanied him. "Thanks to you, time is the one thing I've got plenty of," she replied, stepping up to the bars. "Good, because I came to offer you a deal." "I'm not in the mood for deals, thanks," Maxine said, turning to sit back down on the bed. "Look, Lieutenant, I'm very sorry for everything that's happened…" "Oh really? And which part exactly hurts you? The fact that you sentenced me knowing I was innocent, or the part where Alcott might slaughter a few more teams because of his incompetence?" Morrison sighed and sat down on a sm

"Excuse me…? Are you saying… marry her?!" "Yes," said a woman holding a notepad. "If you marry her, we can spin all of this around and maybe even come out ahead." "You can't be serious!" Liam snapped. "Marry her?" "Stop playing dumb! Yes, marry her," his father cut in firmly. "Fix this, Liam. Or our company won't be the only thing on the line." "And if I refuse?" "Then," the woman with the notepad said, "in a few months we'll have to declare the company bankrupt." Liam took a step back, as if her words had punched him in the gut. This was his company, his work—the only thing he knew how to do. At that moment, it was all he had. "But… but… what if I agree?" he finally asked. "What happens then?" "Basically," the woman said with a grin stretching from ear to ear, "you'll marry Sister Maxine—Miss Maxine—and once she's ready to face the world, we'll hold a press conference to announce the wedding and everything else." The idea of being tied to that woman, even for a short
