My claws were ready, my breath heavy, my muscles tense with the fury of battle. I expected her to rise again, to summon the wind, the lightning, the cursed dead.

But instead, the witch, cowered.

She scrambled backward on all fours like a frightened animal, her body trembling, her eyes wide with something I didn’t expect from a creature like her, fear.

For one horrible second, I thought Derek had been shot.“Derek!” I screamed, turning toward him.
