Ch. 4 - End the Mate

Over the next few days, Eira ignored Kael a little, speaking to him only when necessary. However, she still tried to fulfill her duties as a wife, such as cooking, cleaning the house, and taking care of all of Kael’s needs.

Eira also often left the house and returned before—or even after—Kael did. Since Kael didn’t ask her directly, Eira felt there was no need to explain anything to him.

Even so, that doesn’t mean Eira was completely in the dark about her husband. She kept hearing rumors about her husband’s habit of hiring beautiful women for his own pleasure.

“Are you really okay with your husband always getting caught with another woman? I mean, he's all over the news,” said Lucas, Eira's friend.

Eira gave a small smile, trying to look like everything was fine.

“Aren’t the rumors about Kael just like that?” Eira replied.

“I guess so. But I’m pretty surprised to see you reacting so calmly.”

“That’s because I’m used to it.”

Eira had already decided to ignore the rumor, even though it was clearly one hundred percent accurate. After all, Kael had absolutely no interest in Eira, which made her too tired to do anything about it.

Ignoring Kael didn’t mean Eira was suddenly free from the hanahaki illness she suffered from.

Deep down in her heart, there was clearly still a great love for Kael. And as long as that remained, on top of that, Kael’s firm refusal to be mated with Eira was enough to worsen Eira’s physical condition, which had already become one with the hanahaki.

“Thanks for driving me home, Lucas,” said Eira as she opened the car door after it had pulled up in front of her house.

Lucas nodded with a faint smile, then waved and drove off, while Eira stepped into her dark yard.

Her steps halted when she saw a moonflower that stood out more than the other flowers.

There were no signs of life coming from that one plant.

“This flower will never live,” Eira murmured as she touched the leaves of the moonflower that had dried up and withered in front of the house.

It was the flower she had planted with Kael to fulfill the ritual binding their souls together several years ago. The flower would only grow if there were love from both people whose souls were bound.

If one of them refused, the flower would not grow—or might even turn to ash if the bond between them had been severed.

Eira took a little water and watered it. Her hope in Kael’s love had long since faded, but for some reason, she wanted to see what it would look like if the flower bloomed under the brilliant light of the full moon.

“Do you still remember home?”

Kael stood there, already wearing his pajamas and with his arms crossed, greeting Eira upon her return.

“Yes,” Eira replied—facing her husband.

“I don’t mind if you don’t come home at all,” Kael remarked sarcastically, aware that Eira had indeed started going out frequently and coming home late at night, as if there were no rules anymore.

Although Eira was sometimes at home when he returned, it was undeniable that she still looked neatly dressed while cooking.

“All right. I won’t come home tomorrow,” Eira said casually.

Hearing that, Kael smiled, half-annoyed. It wasn’t like Eira to brush him off like that; instead, she responded to everything he said so casually, as if she didn’t mind at all. Yet Kael had hoped Eira would beg him not to kick her out, since she now had nothing and no one.

She didn’t even have a single friend within her clan, which was extinct.

“Yeah, fine. Take all your stuff with you. You can go live with the men you serve with your body.”

Those words pierced right to the deepest part of Eira’s heart, making her feel suffocated as the Cherry Blossom roots tightened around her heart—a sensation that often left her helpless.

“Ah, that’s right. You get to spend the whole night with the man you have to serve as a prostitute. Don’t you really want to be fucked? Well? Do you like it? It’s fun, isn’t it?” Kael said in a condescending tone.

Even though her eyes were glistening with tears at the accusation, Eira still nodded and forced a smile.

“That’s right. I’m enjoying it. No wonder you like whores so much, Kael,” she said.

Pretending to be strong while hanahaki was eating away at her soul was clearly the wrong decision. Kael would keep cursing her with vile words that would only make her condition worse.

But Eira was truly tired of staying silent and appearing weak in front of Kael. Because if she were weak, it didn’t mean Kael would stop hating her or show even the slightest bit of concern for Eira.

“Oh, thank God you enjoyed it, you slut!” Kael sneered.

“Stop being so cynical, Kael. I’ve followed the advice you gave me. Thank you,” said Eira.

Kael clenched his fists at his sides, trying to keep his wolf’s claws from emerging and attacking Eira. His jaw had tightened, making the veins stand out.

“I’m tired. Excuse me,” said Eira, who could already feel an itch in her throat.

She walked past Kael. Sometimes Eira thought that having a dead heart was far better than never getting used to the pain from the same source of wounds she endured all the time.

“You’re having a great time living your life as a prostitute…”

Eira stopped when Kael suddenly spoke up again. “Yes. And you’re having a great time as a client.” Eira replied quickly.

Kael turned around. Now, from a considerable distance, they looked at each other.

“Let’s end our mating.”

At that moment, it was as if a bolt of lightning had struck Eira’s common sense. Kael said it without hesitation, and the look in his eyes made it clear that he had wanted to break up with Eira for a long time—and this was the first time he’d managed to say it directly.

“Isn’t it easier now that you’ve met so many men? If we both reject our fate...”

“Rejecting fate is very different from defying it, Kael,” Eira quickly interrupted.

Kael chuckled softly. “All right. Let’s say we’ve defied fate. I think a thousand sins would be enough to sever the bonds of our fated.”

“What do you mean, a thousand sins?”

“I’ll be mating with other women, and so will you.”

“Eira is dead, just as you hoped, Kael,” Lucas informed him.Kael stood frozen in place, as if he’d forgotten how to breathe. His eyes never strayed from the tombstone. His gaze, usually so sharp, suddenly went blank. His body, usually upright and commanding, seemed to lose its strength—leaving Kael looking so weak.At first, Lucas thought Kael would receive the news with great joy because what he had long sworn would happen to Eira had finally come to pass. But that man’s nerves seemed to have shut down completely, leaving him utterly unresponsive.“You can throw as many parties as you like now, Kael. No one will get hurt anymore if you bring whores—whores—into your house,” Lucas sneered softly.Kael shook his head vigorously. He also took a step back, moving away from Eira’s grave mound.“No—no. You must be trying to lie to me, Lucas,” he accused.“What would I gain by lying to you?”“Because you’re in love with Eira, aren’t you? You want to hide Eira from me and fabricate a story t

Kael had received the eye donation he’d been hoping for. The surgery went smoothly; Kael didn’t know who had donated the eyes to him—he didn’t need to worry about anything, Lucas said. After the bandage wrapped around his eye was removed, Kael tried to open his eyes slowly, just as the doctor had instructed. A smile never left his lips as he eagerly looked forward to seeing the world again.Light from the lamp slowly entered his field of vision as his eyes tried to adjust to it. There was light, but everything was blurry. Then, little by little, everything became clear. Two nurses were standing to his right. The doctor was to his left, and Lucas was smiling wryly. Ah, no. Behind his smile lay an emotion that made him look stiff.“Can you see me, Mr. Valerius?” asked Dr. Sak.Kael turned his head and gave a slight nod—a bit hesitantly. Not because of his vision, but because of what he was seeing. After several weeks of seeing only darkness—blackness and ominous shadows—he couldn’t beli

Lucas had tried several times to contact Eira, who still hadn’t come to the hospital by late afternoon. He wanted to visit Eira at her house, but the doctor advised against leaving Kael alone.Since Eira wasn’t there, Lucas was the one taking care of Kael, even though it always ended in a commotion.Kael refused to eat or take his medicine. And he kept cursing at Lucas, even though Lucas was really there to help Kael—as his younger brother, regardless of the fact that their relationship as siblings is—terrible.“You have to eat, Kael.” Lucas held out a spoonful of food, but Kael swatted it away, sending it scattering across the floor.“Why are you still here?! I already told you, I don’t want you or Eira anywhere near me!” he snapped.“I’m here to take care of you.”“I don’t need care that’ll just make me die slowly—just like what you and Eira are planning!”The accusations wouldn’t stop. Kael had completely shut his heart off from the truth. No matter how much Eira loved him or how h

Eira’s breath caught in her throat. Kael’s grip on her neck was so tight it nearly cut off her airway. On top of that, the excruciating itching and pain at the base of her throat only added to her suffering.Every beat of Eira’s heart caused pain as if a spear were thrust through one part of her body, then pulled back out only to repeat the same process. Meanwhile, the roots of the cherry blossom growing there entwined tightly around her heart—as if trying to crush it.“KAEL!”Hearing the scream, Eira glanced over and saw Lucas approaching with a look of shock on his face. He even dropped the box he was holding.Without a second thought, Lucas rushed forward and landed a punch to Kael’s face, causing Kael’s grip on Eira’s neck to loosen.“Let go of Eira, you bastard. You’re hurting her!” Lucas punched Kael again.“Oh, so you two are conspiring to destroy me, aren’t you? I knew it!” Kael released his grip and groped around, searching for Lucas.“I’LL KILL YOU BOTH!”The commotion drew

Kael’s condition was deteriorating more frequently because he still couldn’t come to terms with the situation he was facing. Without his sight, Kael felt completely useless in this life.Eira patiently cared for Kael despite being constantly subjected to insults and abuse from her husband. Sometimes, Eira had to lie to Kael to get him to eat so he could recover quickly.“Kael, your condition will get worse if you don’t take your medicine,” Eira told him.“So, if I take the medicine, will my sight come back?” he replied sarcastically.Eira let out a long sigh. She’d run out of ideas on how to persuade Kael. Not only was her own body growing weaker, but she also had to constantly care for Kael, which left her many times more exhausted than before.Even without being reminded, Eira hoped for Kael’s recovery more than her own. She’d forgotten the fact that her body was in pain because she wanted Kael to live a healthy life again.“Isn’t this what you want, Eira?”Eira looked up slightly a

Eira was at her limit. She was in such excruciating pain in her throat and chest that all she could do was roll back and forth in that dark warehouse. There was no sign that Kael was going to open the door.In addition to the smell of dust, her nose now detected the faint, metallic scent of her own blood mixed with the scent of cherry blossoms, which only made Eira feel nauseous.“Eira? Where are you?!”Eira’s eyes flew open, even though she knew she couldn’t see a thing in such complete darkness. It wasn’t Kael’s voice, but she felt a slight sense of relief in her chest upon hearing someone call her name.Eira began crawling toward the door with what little strength she had left and tapped on it repeatedly. Her voice was gone. It was too painful to force herself to scream for help.“Eira? Hey, is anyone in here?”The voice sounded clearer and clearer. Eira tapped on the wooden door again, as if to let them know she was there. She heard the doorknob turn several times as someone tried
