Grant noticed her absence before anyone mentioned it.

Cassian slowly opened his eyes. For a few seconds, everything around him was a blur. The ceiling above him was white. The lights were painfully bright, and there was a dull pressure pounding against the side of his head.He blinked several times, trying to remember where he was. Then he turned his head.Scarlett was sitting beside his bed.She looked exhausted. Her arms were folded across her chest, and there was a cup of untouched coffee sitting on the small table beside her. The moment she noticed his eyes were open, she straightened.“Cassian?”He frowned.“What happened?”Scarlett exhaled, relief washing across her face.“You passed out.”Cassian tried to sit up.Pain immediately shot through his head.“Easy.”Scarlett placed a hand against his shoulder.“You have a concussion. Nothing too severe, according to the doctors, but she hit your head pretty badly.”Cassian closed his eyes for a moment. Then the memories began returning. The warehouse. The photographs.Elise.The gun.His inv

There were footsteps all around the building Elise stood with the gun pressed tightly against her side.Cassian watched her from the chair, every muscle in his body tense. He could also hear the footsteps outside. One at first. His investigator.Cassian knew the man well enough to know he wouldn’t simply rush inside. He would be assessing the situation first.Elise didn’t know that and that was what made her dangerous. She took another step toward the door.“Elise.”She stopped but didn't look back.Cassian kept his voice low.“Look at me.”She didn’t.Her fingers tightened around the gun.“He followed you?” she asked in a whisper.“Yes.”Her breathing became faster.“He’s going to call the police.”“He probably already has.”Elise turned sharply.Cassian met her eyes.“But killing him won’t change that.”Her expression hardened.“You don’t know that.”“I do.”“You’re just saying that because you’re afraid.”Cassian almost smiled.“I am afraid.”The admission made Elise pause.Cassian conti

The first thing Cassian felt was pain.A sharp, relentless ache pulsed through the side of his head. Then came the taste of metal.Blood.Cassian’s brows drew together. For several seconds, he remained completely still. His head felt heavy, his thoughts were slow.Fragments of memory came back to him in pieces. The warehouse. The darkness. His phone.Elise.Then-The impact.Cassian’s eyes opened.Everything was blurry.Light cut through the darkness in thin, pale streams, slipping through the dirty windows high above him. His vision shifted slightly as he blinked.Once.Twice.Then everything became clear. He immediately tried to move.Nothing happened. His hands were tied behind the chair and his legs were secured too.Cassian went completely still. For the first time since opening his eyes, his expression changed. His jaw tightened. He slowly tested the restraints.Strong.Professional enough that they wouldn’t come loose simply because he pulled harder. His pulse remained steady. But his mind
